I had my girl with me that day when he came down on top of us. She was too young to hunt but I had let her carry a single barrel 410 just to teach safety and how to hold a gun. I helped her shoot a couple times just so she would have the experience but I mostly held the gun when she did.

I only had a few shells for the 410 in my pocket and I wouldn't have given her a shell or loaded gun just to sit with. Anyway, old guy comes in on us when I shoot about 8 birds fairly quick. I spoke nice to him but saw he wasn't going away. I pretended to slip a shell in her 410 and backed the hammer. He decided he needed to be somewhere else about that time, and we had a great hunt afterwards.

Veteran move. I'll be putting that'n in my playbook.
