Always have been curious about this and I figure it's a biological deal, maybe.
Alabama's bow season opens Oct. 15 or so.
Mississippi opens Oct. 1.
Georgia opens Sept. 8.
Tennessee opens the third (or fourth?) weekend of September, usually.
Why does Georgia start five weeks earlier than us, and Tennessee-Mississippi 2-3 weeks earlier? Is it a biological difference or a department-legislative thing?

I have always disliked how late our bow season opens. You don’t actually get but a few days or a couple weeks at most with the bucks still grouped up. Same concerning the weather patterns. The leaves start falling by last week at the latest of October. I use to love getting to hunt in Tennessee at the end of September. All of my summer work could be put to use immediately. It don’t mean squat by mid October since the deer are in a transition period. Wish we could get it changed. Bow hunters and muzzleloader hunters get the short end of the stick in Alabama. There’s plenty of ways to do it too and keep the rifle hunters happy. Just my 2 cents worth.

I suspect it's more about money management than resources. South Carolina opens in August. Good lord, I couldn't imagine going deer hunting in August.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

I wish Alabama would go to an Oct. 1 bow opener or at least the first Saturday of October.

I suspect it's more about money management than resources. South Carolina opens in August. Good lord, I couldn't imagine going deer hunting in August. That's on the private Lowcountry land where all the plantations were/are, and folks wanted to shoot "velvet bucks" and lodges wanted to sell hunts to make money. UncleHuck, that makes sense about rut timing and stocking. I figure that's what it is, mostly.

Gun hunters, and dog hunters, went ape chit nuts about it. You'd think we tried to rape their grandma.

I remember that and it was a good idea, but thwarted by all the bitching.
We could open the season now on Sept. 20 or so and still not make much more of an impact.

Clem, all of those states have breeding periods that average much earlier than most of AL.

The state doesn't want us to have the opportunity of a velvet buck either... Why do you say that? I’ve never had anyone from our agency tell me they didn’t want people to kill velvet bucks. Has someone told you they didn’t?

Maybe it's because their seasons are over by the middle of January and/or they've got splits, shorter overall seasons and limits on the number of deer they can kill....
Are y'all just wanting deer season to be open year round? How many days do you need to shoot all the does you can haul away?
Did you people even look at the seasons and bag limits for these States before making these posts?
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

Yes. Don't be a jackwagon. I know, and knew, their seasons closed in January. I merely wondered why the three states around us, and mostly Mississippi and Georgia, started their seasons 2-3 weeks earlier. I even put in the very first line of the post that I figured it was and is biological, which Matt confirmed. Also, I can haul away a lot of does. I'll think of you right before I pull the trigger on them this season.

Yeah, I am discussing the fact you said the agency I worked for didn’t want hunters to kill velvet bucks, and I’ve never heard that. Just wondering if it was fact based.

It is not fact based what so ever, like a lot of talk om this forum. Sorry I hit a nerve.

Just more info to add to my cache as I continue making plans about how to have year-round hunting seasons for unlimited animals night or day. We anarchists never sleep until we can topple everything.

Good thing you aren't hunting in Georgia Clem you can only haul away 10 over there and I think 3 in Mississippi....
I'm surprised you ain't over there with a sign out in front of the DCNR protesting this clear overreach of Government rules and regulations. How dare they. And to think they open their seasons earlier to boot! Bunch A-Holes.
Hail they probably got people that participate in Game Check too! What a travesty.
