NEVER before third week of September. If I were planting in LA it would be later than that.

We would normally do the second weekend in Sept., but would have been better off several times to just wait it out another 2-3 weeks

September is historically a very dry month. We might get a few afternoon scattered showers but you can't depend on rain in September. If you plant fall crops before October you're a bigger gambler than me.
My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

September is too dry nd hot. If you get a rain it will be too hot around here. I always wait until the second week of October or later.

Last week in September or first week of October for me in Florida Panhandle for fall food plots like full draw or green patch plus. Earlier or later than that has been nothing but trouble. One year I planted later in October and it never rained. Nothing came up. Early September too hot.

I'm in extreme South Alabama, and we usually plant between the middle of October and the middle of November. Northern and even central AL may not be able to wait that late, but there are several good reasons to wait as late as possible to plant, especially if you have a late January rut. First, there is a higher availability of other food sources in the earlier part of late fall /early winter (leftover ag crops such as peanuts, corn, soy beans and of course acorns if they make) and the deer won't need the food plots as much. Second, cereal grains such as oats/wheat/rye become less and less palatable to deer as they mature because they become fibrous and "stemmy" as they get older. Deer prefer it when it is young, tender and succulent. By the end of the season around here, I definitely see a difference in deer usage in the fields that were planted last (middle Nov) compared to the fields that were planted first (mid Oct), assuming your fertilizer and soil conditions are similar.
