They say that about the 35 Whelen too, but I've made a one shot kill at a measured 276 yards with it. I've never owned any of the big bore lever guns but I like the looks of the 1895 Winchester and the history of the 405.

The 405 grain can reach out and kill easily to 400 or 500 yards in the hands of a skilled marksman.
Not me, of course, but someone who is much better than me.
When I say, "drops like a brick" that's a relative term in comparison to the smaller loads available.
And because I'm not the marksman, that I once was, I prefer to shoot something with a flatter trajectory within my typical hunting ranges.
