I am thinking about leasing some land in one of these counties for next year as it is closer to the house. How many of yall have hunted there and whats it like. Deer population, bucks, time of rut. Any information would be great. Thanks.

Im thinking about it. I would like to get closer to the house. Wouldn't mind about 500 to a 1000. But want a place with some big deer potential.

I've hunted in Monroe county the last 8 years. It has a fairly dense deer population. The rut usually occurs the last 10 days of January to on over into February. Last year, at least in my section of Monroe county, the full on rut never did kick in.

The quality of the bucks are good as well. I've killed a couple of bucks over the last few years just shy of 140". Saw one last year bigger than the ones I have on the wall.

I have hunted Monroe County (Tunnel Springs/Scotland) the last 4 years, and I agree with gobbler30 assessment. The rut is usually the last of week of January, all thought it was well into February last year. This year looks like maybe an early rut. Two bucks were killed yesterday with swollen necks and black, stinking tarsal glands. They have been scraping up the woods since bow season opened. There seems to be a decent deer population here. I have seen a few really good bucks from this area. There was 148" deer killed this year on the club next to us.

Every tract is site specific. I've hunted some great places in all 3 counties and I've hunted some shiatty places in all 3 counties.

As for the rut, my former club in South Wilcox was normally last week of Jan, my last place in North Monroe was typically 2nd week Feb and my current place in South Monroe has been 2nd week of Jan the 3 years I've had it.

I've hunted in Old Texas ( Monroe County ) the past five years and found it to be very hard huntin as compared to the place I hunt in MGM county. Those deer down there are very well educated. Beautiful land and area. Lot of pine trees and very little hard woods on this tract of land. Best chance to kill a buck is the middle of January till the end of deer season.
