I run two squirrel dogs all hunting season, and I run the latest Garmin TT system. I'm forced to hunt mainly WMA's until Feb 10th when there's not a deer hunt, so I travel quite a bit to give to have a good time and to let them do what they live for. I do my best not to crowd other hunters, but with a cur and a feist, they can easily hunt over 80-100-120 acres in a 2-3 hour hunt. I have 170 acres that I own, and I still don't hunt on it until after deer season goes out, because there's a deer club that touches a half mile of my southern boundary. The deer club president and I talk, being that we are neighbors, and I still don't want to run the risk of them treeing off my property on them, and screwing up any of the member's hunts, and having anyone even think of pulling the trigger on one.
These dogs double as pets and are as loyal to me and my family as any dog a man could have. I have two sons 10 and 5 that would be destroyed if some jack-rump shoots one of them.. not to mention a pretty upset me.
I purposefully go out of my way to minimize the chances of my dogs screwing up anyone's deer hunt... to the point of me passing up very huntable land until the orange army has left the woods. It's a pisser for squirrel hunters, because I that only leaves me three - four weekends to hunt at the end of the year. And just in case you're wondering, the time ahead of deer season DNR gave us to make up for extending the deer season into Feb is not good, because the leaves are still on. Early season squirreling is OK for still hunting... not so much for scanning for hidden, treed squirrels. And I still hold my breath every time I take them out, praying that we don't accidentally bump into some crazy deer hunter (or poachers out of season) that thinks I can control where two dogs go every second of every hunt.
I'm the same way. I do my best not to interfere with someone that's deer hunting. I generally hunt national forest and try to stay away from other parked trucks. I've got a track and train collar and an orange collar with info tag on him.
Unlike deer and coon dogs that will hunt to the next county, my cur is usually within 100-200 yards from me. While my dog is out hunting, I'm constantly keeping tabs on where he's at.
