I’m sitting in a stand for the third straight day, I’ve driven the backroads from Covington county to Barbour county, driven early mornings and late evenings. I have not seen a single damn deer. Not one.

I know this is just an isolated event but I also KNOW that our state has less deer now then it did 15-20 years ago.

When I was a kid we saw deer on the side of the roads all the time. It was nothing to count 10-20 deer on the way home from Thomasville to Mobile. Not uncommon to see 25 deer in Mr. Gaston’s cow field in Grand Bay. Of course that was when we only had a 2 week season on does.

We wonder why only 6/10 young men are taking up the sport of hunting. In a world of instant gratification, it is challenging for a boy to sit 3 hours in a stand and only see maybe one two or no deer.

The good thing is I believe more people are seeing this too. I’m in contact with a lot of clubs and more are restricting doe killing. I hope you are one of those clubs. Rant over.

It also doesn't help that it's been overcast and no moon. You won't see nearly as many deer on the roads with those conditions. My AL hunting brethren are seeing plenty of deer in Covington and Barbour counties.

Man I feel u Reb, it was that way here in North AL all my life growing up, we had no deer. Not trying to be “ Mr 1 upper or anything, but I’ve seen so many deer while hunting this year here it’s unreal. I’ve only been a couple times and saw zero, most days I lose count of how many I’ve actually saw. Robinhedd

Still plenty of deer around here.

You can thank the dmap and biologist for the relentless doe killing recs in the 90's. It's rearing its head coupled with isolated predator/disease outbreaks.

Actually, that should help daytime deer sightings.

The doe killing damn near wiped the Marshall County deer herd out. Hopefully it's on the rebound.

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

haleyville al,
I counted 10 yesterday in a field by my house. Saw several on my way to my in-laws last night. We have seen more this year then we have have in the last several years.

Reb,

The folks that have never had deer like we did here will never understand what you are saying.
And, yes....I totally agree with everything you just said.

Saw probably 30 early this morning on the way back to demop from Tuscaloosa, I've hunted twice this year without seeing a single deer both times were in snow. I've seen more deer in the last two seasons than I ever have on my place. I remember the days where I'd see 40-50 deer on a drive in Sumter county back in the 80s

Some areas still have plenty of deer, lots left in my area. All private land that's not hunted to hell and back. Enough deer that you better make your food plots real big and if you grow summer plots they need to be 4-5 acres or bigger or have a good fence or they'll never even get started

I've probably seen close to 100 deer this season. And that's just while hunting, that don't count numerous roadside deer.
It's not unusual to see 8 or 12 from my back door, most evenings.
My green fields look like they been mowed down with a weed eater.

Correct. You said you haven't seen any at night.

Me and a buddy was talking about this yesterday. From what I remember when I started deer hunting in mid seventies it was a buck a day with 4 doe days Thanksgiving weekend. Then a few years later it was a buck a day and a two week doe season. Then a few years later it went to a buck and a doe a day. Then years later it went to 4 bucks a season but still a doe a day.

What made the changes? Where is the hard numbers to back it up? I was always lead to believe at one time Alabama was resident to over a million deer. Now I hear some say we have less than half of that number from 25 years ago.

The problem isn't too few deer.
The problem is too many people.

You are getting outdeered. Poeple are doing lots of new techniques for deer today so you have to adapt. We have a ton of IP we use to attract, hold, maintain deer.
