I hunt in some prime deer hunting property in the blackbelt and there are a significant number of people that complain about not seeing deer, all I can do is laugh at them. They seem to think that continually hunting the same way, not scouting and doing the same thing over and over and over again is going to somehow miraculously change their luck. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to walk out on a greenfield and see tracks and just about every blade of green clipped off to putting green height to know deer are there. But apparently one has to be a brain surgeon to figure out that deer are feeding in the plot after dark when they have "sat" on the plot and not seen a deer for the 42nd time.

MBrock kills a 150 inch buck every year on the 50 yardline of Legion Field.
If there was one living there I'll bet he could do it. There are tons there, no doubt. Just got to know how to hunt. Overpopulated. Need to kill more. Must kill more.

I’d guess it was someone petitioning coal pollution. Those F’n treehuggers with their clean water and whatnot. Exactly who needs clean water

I hunted both the national forest and the WMA a few times over the years, and I saw deer on more hunts than not, and saw a couple of nice bucks. I killed a doe with my bow on a food plot. I never did see a lot of deer, but there are deer there. There are also quite a few hunters on that area that see plenty of deer and bring out a few great bucks each year. It’s NEVER going to have high numbers of deer. There’s a certain percentage of the place that received little to zero management because of the wilderness designation, or minimal impact designation. Only congressional action can change that. The hunters I’ve talked to say the numbers seem to be getting better since the reduction in antlerless harvest, but it’s not going to happen overnight. Spotlight surveys indicate there’s more deer than y’all think. I can’t go to a food plot out there without seeing tracks and grazing. The population is low, but I don’t think anything will change that short of drastic habitat improvement. Booosh!!

Im all for antler restrictions. Too many people shooting yoing bucks IMO. We could have some really record breaking deer if we would get serious about shooting older age class deer.

You N AL guys crack me up. Most of us guys down south would trade a testicle for a 100 acres of hardwoods instead of the 1,000's of acres of pine thickets and clearcuts. I prefer hardwoods instead of pines and clear cuts. I've seen deer eat acorns I've never seen one eat a pine cone

But I came to realize if you want to have a good deer herd you need a good ballance of several different timber varieties including pines.

Sounds like you practice the brand of management you want, should the government dictate the manufacturer of the gun, cartridge, cell phone, truck, 4 wheeler, ladderstand, treestand, shooting house everyone should use also?? Just curious how much control you want the government to have on everybody else to shoot a deer.

Got to have a mixture of trees what I was talking about is the places like say Sam R WMA for example is say 80% if not more of that place is a pine tree or a recent clear cut. The only hardwoods being SMZ yes it's great cover and habitat but with very little food source. Then for say the black warrior WMA and the bankhead national forest is say probally 60% or so hardwoods with the rest being scattered pine thickets, and scrub brush briars, beach trees etc. and in the forest side some recent timber cutting. To me that seems like a decent mixture of habitat, cover, and food source it might be the best mixture ratio but its got to be better then 17k acres of pure pines in varying stages of growth.

And only the WMA has antler restriction on b side. I'm pretty sure correct me if I'm wrong Matt but national forest land was was one section, no "a&b"sides, and followed state regulations. Not WMA reg
The national forest is open permit land and subject to statewide regs. The only exception is either sex gun days.

That's about 3 miles from my house. Springhill grocery is a good 20-25 minutes from the edge of the forest. Seems like an odd store for it to be at considering there are several closer to Bankhead.

You must live pretty close to me then. That store seems to get all the petitions. Micheal and Kathy are good folks though
