Shuter, you are right about the 6.5 . My grandfather has an improved 6.5rem mag that will be mine one day or I would seriously consider that route.


A 25-06 would also be a good choice to rebarrel. I can't remember where but there is a place that will rent you a reamer.


I'd probably stick with a 7 RM. With an -06 size cartridge you would have to open the bolt face up and buy a new follower to get it to feed right. Magnums are usually easier to find at a good price.
