You can rent the disc machine from lowes, just buy plenty of the disc pads (sandpaper) be sure to start in the middle of the floor til you get use to running it! Sounds like the voice of experience - and maybe a good story?

I did my churchs basement a few years ago. Materials didnt cost a fortune but i near worked myself to death trying to get all that carpet glue up. Also there was some old concrete in the biggest room, which was the old church, that was real chalky. It did not take the stain. I stained it and clearcoated it on a friday and left with it looking great. I came back sunday morning and it was gone. Just like i had never done it. I ended up painting that room with some of that gritty paint. That looked pretty good too.

Here’s the problem now. You really don’t have a whole lot of choices due to the existing paint will keep from any floor finish adhesive or thinset from adhering to the existing substrate. Also grinding the concrete will make a lot of dust in the building plus clean up if done wet.
First I would try a heavy duty buffing machine with a good course pad and a stripper product that will cut that carpet glue residue. Once you get that off It will be more cost effective to go back with a concrete paint to cover up the existing. This! Not that I really know anything about it, but Leroy sounds like he does.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Not to high jack your thread, but our church is about to build a separate youth worship center. It appears you had a stage and music/instruments involved. Question is: what were the acoustics like with the concrete floor with carpet and what will it be like WITHOUT the carpet?

I haven't done too much as far as worship goes in this room, we have another space we are using for the time being. The acoustics without carpet obviously wont be great, but you can fix that with acoustic paneling on the walls. Carpet helps, so do bodies.

How about putting an low industrial carpet back in?
I have used muriatic acid Hydrochloric acid) to take the surface and glue off from concrete. Then go back with a good sealer.
I would look into some of that stuff they make to coat garage floors, I think you can get the kit with cleaner and paint for not too much.
