I have a fire going as well. We have a mason fire box, but it ain't putting out near the heat that my old fireplace did that had a metal insert. Am I missing something? Why not as much heat?

Regular fire place much of the heat goes up the chimney, with an insert more heat is radiated forward into the room. If it has a blower you really get full benefit .

That's what I was thinking, but why does it go out of chimney more than the other? My old one was a metal insert, but it is open just like this mason one. The flu on the mason is a lot bigger, maybe letting more heat up??

A insert is usually double walled, even if it doesn't have a blower it will direct heat back to the front , into the room. With just a fireplace there's nothing to catch most of the heat from going straight up.

The firebox should actually be tapered in from front to back and the back wall of it should be rolled but not many masons know how to build them like that. Even built correct they aren’t efficient. The only ones I’ve ever seen that believe were are the Russian fireplaces

Yeh my chimney is fire bricked to the top with an expanded smoke chamber and and a tapered fire box with a roll in the flu. I work with a rock mason an he explained all this to me. With all the well built riga-ma-roll youd think itd put out heat. Wrong..that sucker would freeze you to death and burn bout 3 times as much wood. Now that i put my insert in i burn way less wood and it will dang near heat my whole house. I set my thermostat on 70 and let it burn. I built a fire friday evenin an the house was 66 degrees, in 2 hours the house was 76 degrees, and by the time me an my wife went to bed it was 84 in the house. When i get it up like that ill set my unot to 70 to allow for the cool down when the fire starts to die. Not crazy about the looks of an insert but man that sucker will heat
