I had a M77 Frontier in 7mm-08 that I enjoyed a lot and killed several deer with. I traded it and probably should have kept it. It was very heavy for its length though.
I’ve owned a couple Ruger American Compacts in .308. They had a bit of recoil but not turrible. I think the .308 may be greatest deer caliber ever.
