Barton's Very Old is very good bourbon. As for scotch, Ardbeg and Laphroaig both have several great offerings, while Balvenie 17yo and 21yo are excellent! All should be taken neat...

Please don't waste Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Bulleit, or Maker's Mark by mixing it with anything...those are sipping whiskeys meant to be had neat or with a splash of water. If you're mixing with anything else, go cheap, like Jim Beam, or something...

Famous Grouse is a really nice blended scotch. Probably my favorite. However, if the OP is wanting to get started drinking whiskey, Scotch is probably the wrong place to start, as would a strong Tennessee Sour Mash whiskey or even a bourbon. Why? Well... to most seasoned whiskey drinkers (And all of those fall under the banner of "whiskey.") Scotch (even smooth blended ones) bourbon, and whiskey all especially formulated to have very distinct flavor profiles from the mash bill, smoked peat, repurposed whiskey, wine, port, etc... barrels or new, toasted oak barrels - can have an extremely strong taste to someone new to whiskey and even seem harsh. So even though I am an experienced Whiskey, Bourbon, Scotch drinker, I'm not going to recommend any of my favorites to the OP saying, "Buy Famous Ted's Super Hearty 20 year old Rye and you will thank me later..." No I am going to recommend that you start with a nice blended Canadian whiskey such as 40 Creek or Crown Royal or (Gasp!) even Rich and Rare Reserve or Canadian Club. And I am going to recommend that you not drink it "neat" (meaning straight up) because even that is going to come across harsh to a new whiskey drinker. I am going to recommend that you pour about 1.5 oz over ice in a short glass and then add a little water to it to mellow it out even more. Once you have acquired a taste, then experiment with some of the various brands of Canadian whiskies drinking them over ice once you have acquired a taste for those move to an Irish whiskey like Tullamore D.E.W. and experiment with Irish whiskies for a while before moving on to bourbon. Once you have experimented with Bourbons then you can start experimenting with Blended Scotch and then Single malt Scotches. If you haven't died from liver failure by that point.  That's my suggestion. We don't just go straight for the scotch, you have to work up to that.

What I said was, "...if the OP is wanting to get started drinking whiskey, Scotch is probably the wrong place to start, as would a strong Tennessee Sour Mash whiskey or even a bourbon." There is a great difference in meaning of those two statements. And the word is conceited and not conceded. Even though I am neither of those things. I'm just trying to make a suggestion to get the guy started. People don't start out drinking unsweet tea or black coffee.

Speak for your self Irish.... at 3 years old I was drinking single malt scotch, black coffee and smoking Marlboro reds Funny you say that I actually drank my first Budweiser when I was about 10 and smoked my first Marlboro when I was 11. Thank God neither one of those took.

I prefer an ice cold beer, but like to mix, jack, jim, crown with sprite or coke from time to time. Never have much enjoyed drinking any of it straight. What would be a reasonable priced, easy drinking whiskey or bourbon for a well seasoned beer drinker? Would like to try and find some I could enjoy from time to time. Bourbon is whiskey or whisky. You have blended scotch whiskey, single malt scotch whiskey , sour mash, bourbon, Canadian. For a beer drinking tenderfoot that likely lacks a palate, I'd suggest steering clear of scotch or single malt. Try sour mash or bourbon. Jack Daniels Black is your basic sour mash you can try mixing with some ice and coke or ice and some water. The folks on here suggested some good Bourbons to try. I like Woodford Reserve but for a newbie I'd suggest Maker's Mark like some already mentioned. Try mixing the bourbon with ice and water first before destroying its character and flavor with coke or other mixer. It's also nice to drink an ice cold beer with bourbon on ice. If you find you're going to be a person that mixes with soda and such, stick with Jack as a lot cheaper than some of the bourbons. If you find you like mixing with coke or soda, then you can try blended Scotch whiskey or Canadian to mix. Enjoy trying the new refreshments.

I, like good bourbon and good scotch, right now I have been on the Jefferson's, and woodford reserve, while I agree with Irish to a point I would think you could start with Woodford reserve just mix it with a couple ice cubes and sip..... I would not start with scotch, it takes a minute to appreciate a good scotch..
I learned long ago that most of a hangover comes from the sweet crap I used to mix with my whiskey....

scotch on the rocks (ice makes water). single malt, please. benriach, balvenie, oban, talisker are a few favorites from the highland and speyside regions.
i haven't tried but a flask's worth, and enjoyed it, but monkey shoulder is a good blended scotch. a friend's dad had them put some of his ashes in a monkey shoulder bottle to be buried at the old family homeplace cemetery.
other blended scotches that I've enjoyed are dimple pinch, old famous grouse and started on scotch with chevas regal.
agree with what's been posted above that you shouldn't jump right off into scotch, very likely you won't enjoy it.

I think a hangover comes from dehydration.. That is true also but the sugar in the mixers does make it way worse, at least for me...
