When I coached an 8 year old kid pitch team we pitched from 35 feet. I had a kid hit a line drive back to the pitcher and hit him dead center of his hat bill. If the ball would have been an inch lower there is no doubt in my mind the kid would be dead or seriously injured. This was done with a Catalyst composite big barreled bat the kid hit the ground like a sack of potatoes and I thought he was dead, the ball was hit so hard I didn't even see it come off the bat. He had a knot on his forehead where the bill impacted his head but he got back up and finished the game. I did get the pitching distance moved to 40 feet after that but it was a scary incident.


pitchers at that age definitely need a facemask and a heart guard
