I've looked at Honda, Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. I'm leaning towards a Yamaha Kodiak 700. That one costs less than a Honda Rubicon 450. I can't justify paying more for less, thus the Kodiak seems like the better way to go. I'm considering buying new, but am also not opposed to getting a used one that was garage kept by someone's grandad with next to no hours on it. A couple of absolutes for me: 1. Automatic transmission 2. Power steering So what do y'all like/dislike about ATV's these days? Is there anything I should absolutely stay away from, or something I can't live without? I plan to keep the 4-wheeler (hopefully) for the next 15-20 years. My plan is to use it only for hunting and getting deer out.

X2.. When I was in the market for a 4wheeler, I wanted something that was dead reliable. I ended up with 07 foreman 500. Nothing fancy but carb, foot shift and 2WD is about as reliable as it gets

I've owned many yamahas through the years and never a problem with any other than routine maintenance. I have an 07 big bear now with 4400 miles on it, just replaced front brake pads and new rear axles, the cv joint were starting to pop so I went on and relplaced both, still has original battery too. My only complaint is the cv axles, the IRS is great and will contour to the terrain better than straight axle units but requires more maintenace, like axle boots getting torn etc. be careful crossing over limbs and thick brush and keep your cv boots checked and you will be good for a long time.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

Honda with Yahama a very close second. The only two I would consider.

I didn't know there were any other 4 wheelers made other than Hondas. The only thing with the Hondas is they use some type of corn based product in their wiring or at least they did on the 420s and the mice will eat the hell out the wiring harness. I think they changed this on the 14s and newer. About $400 to have the harness changed.

Another plus on most 4x4 Yamaha is a locking front differential you can lock and unlock, never seen a honada with one, not sure about the newer hondas. This is a plus when you get in those unexpected places.
