a preform is a started, roughed out biface. It can be traded or saved till later to finish and make a point/knife. Sometimes these were made at quarry sites to remove weight when transporting to their home base. Nobody wants to carry a big rock that may or may not be usable once you get inside it. Better to find out at the quarry site.
