I hope it helps our timber prices rebound some. Its gotten where its not really worth the investment and risk for individuals to fool with.

What are the pros/cons of this?
Higher cost for new construction is the first that comes to mind since we use a lot of Canadian lumber. I guess that would be a pro for government revenue but a con for builders and consumers.

I saw this on Fox. He was also addressing how the Canadians have put the MILK industry in jeopardy in some states.

Canada doesn't think twice about sticking it to us so I'm in support of this. Several years ago, a customer of mine was was going to rent some material from me and take to a job he had in Canada. Canada was going to tax him on the material at such a high rate, for not renting it there, that it wasn't financially sensible to rent it from me.

All of these protectionist things might help the landowner and timber companies, but hurt the consumer. There's no upside for the consumer, but maybe a few more logging jobs if prices are propped up. ^^^^I agree with this. I actually want to buy American but I'm not going to pay extra for someone's inefficiencies.

I actually want to buy American but I'm not going to pay extra for someone's inefficiencies. The canadian subsidies create artificial prices, propped up by government intervention. They really can't harvest and sell the wood for the prices that they do without ole buddy Canadian government paying out the ass to cover the losses. All Trump is doing is trying to keep the market as free as possible. In a global economy it is impossible to control how the "other guy" wants to run their country, but we can put measures in place to ensure the "other guy" and their socialistic practices don't effect honest Americans that actually abide by free-market rules.

All Trump is doing is trying to keep the market as free as possible. So Canadians are paying higher taxes so us folks in Alabama can have cheap lumber and Trump is going to put a stop to that.

Builders don't care, it's a pass through. They do when people stop buying new construction in favor of older homes.

In the 90's I was working buying logs for a family owned sawmill. The Canadian's were beating our socks off with their prices on lumber delivered to the US. The lumber organization got a few lobbyist to get a law passed to help out. The wording of the agreement had a big old loophole in it. They drilled a 1/32nd inch hole near the end of the boards and shipped them as being a finished product, internet hole, and didn't miss a beat. You couldn't hardly see the little hole. The Canadian sawmills get their logs off of government (Crown) land for basically free cost. They have one sawmill, Canfor, that can cut 600 million feet of lumber in a year, Graceville Lumber is one of the biggest around here and it might get 1 million feet in a week, sometimes.. They had a 1300 mile long by 400 mile wide bug kill they were working on then and they were whacking and stacking 24/7. I wouldn't hold my breath on the US lumber producers and the loggers getting much help.

Free trade is always a good thing. Starting a protectionist trade war with our two largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, is NOT good for Americans.
