Caught this little fella in the driveway - what do I have? Initially thought grey rat snake, but doesn't appear to be.

Marked like a juvenile hognose, but looks way to long to still have juvey markings. Also favors a pygmy rattler (they don't always have rattles). I'm gonna go with a diced water snake.

It is a harmless tiny beneficial dekays brown, or, a copper headed water rattler...open to interpretation. smile

Thanks for the quick reply - google search seems to match your thoughts. Snake was about a foot long and a full grown dekays brown snake is 13" so I can tell the wifey that there aren't 25 more babies slithering around. Snake has been relocated to a perfect habitat.

Snakes that are 13" long full grown have babies too. They are just tiny and can hide in smaller spaces like your shoes or your ear when you catch a nap out on the deck....and I think those have like 50 babies.
