Past Ol’ man Finley’s plac...
Boys I am proud of this one so bear with me on the pics and story grin Thank the Lord for letting me redeem myself after the miss. I've been chasing turkeys for 7 springs and this is my first go around at hunting public land for turkeys. I spent a lot of shoe leather and gas scouting cahaba in February and early march and found a couple of promising spots. Well I've been on birds but after a miss, a couple of butt whoopings, and another hunter driving in on me and scaring a gobbler off I decided to give that spot a rest and try a new one this morning. I heard two birds this morning. One bird gobbled early, I moved on him but he never gobbled enough to get a good bead on him. So I circled back to where I started. At 730 the bird I heard early got cranked up again. I was calling to him and a bird in front of me gobbled. He was coming to me so turned my attention to him. As I was moving to get setup on him I spotted a hen in the road and bailed off the side of the road into a little ditch. Well, that's where I was pinned down for the rest of the hunt. About 35 yards in front of me there was a road that cut to the left. This bird gobbled and strutted to me but he stayed just out of sight on this little road. From 8am until I pulled the trigger at 9am this bird gobbled, spit and drummed in my face and I just couldn't see him. He was above me on the other road with thick briars and saplings between us. He was gobbling so hard it sounded like he was choking at the end of his gobble. After much coaxing and 10 minutes of the silent treatment he finally stepped out in the road, I could only see from his waddles up but that is all I needed. 35 yard shot and 7+ miles round trip walk. He was a hard gobbling 2 year old. 18lb 5oz, 9 7/8 beard and matching 6/8 spurs.

The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
