I have the same issue with motorcycle helmets. If you don't want to wear one, fine with me. But don't expect insurance to cover your medical bills because you wanted to play stupid games.

It's their insurance, they pay for it. You don't want another loophole for insurance companies. They might start as well start fining you for not eating healthy

The problem with this is, and it has been tossed around before, even without insurance the hospitals are duty bound to provide all the care they can and somebody is going to have to pay for it. With no insurance payment, we as taxpayers are going to be stuck with the tab because most of the population isn't going to be able to pay catastrophic hospital costs. After my wife's fall I'm finding out that even with good insurance, the costs are outrageous. The bill for the helicopter flight was $61,000. Blue Cross Peehip paid $11,000 of it. The Life flight company called and wanted to know if we were going to be paying the $50,000 with a check or credit card? Normally bills like that would bother me, but the thought of expecting people to write $50,000 checks is so outrageous it is just funny to me.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I tend to wear it only when I am on the highway or when I am on a road going over ~45mph. Not really intentional, it just usually doesn't occur to me until then. Most of my daily travel is on neighborhood or city streets, and I do not wear a seatbelt.

With that said, since I have had a child I have been trying to wear it more.

Sounds good to me. The same for folks that want to smoke cigarettes but want me to subsidize their medical costs for lung cancer and emphysema.

There are volumes of evidence to prove that you are better off wearing a seatbelt than not wearing one.

If you're in bad enough shape to not be able to do something as simple as unclick a seatbelt, chances are you're not going to be in any shape to escape a burning or sinking car either.

drive an old vw rabbit diesel 80mi round trip every day for several years and you'll look for that seat belt and anything else to help you feel better in that tiny thing. I started wearing it then (before the law was passed) and have just kept wearing it. Still believe it should be choice.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

I wear one on the interstate, the circle around Dothan and when my wife is in the car, hearing her constantly saying "buckle up " is more annoying than the warning that I had cut off.

I have. 17 year old girl ran off the road and ended up in a small, deep, hole in a creek...wouldn't even have known she was there if the accident hadn't been witnessed by another motorist. I was the recovery diver. Her seatbelt was fastened, and the webbing had come unraveled in her struggle to get out of it...never seen a web belt come apart like that. It took me over an hour to cut all the strands free and recover her, and it was terrible thinking about how long it had taken her to get herself that entangled...she didn't die well.

That said, I realize that web belts don't normally come apart like that one did. I, my family, and anyone who rides with me, buckle up.

For those that are concerned with being trapped underwater and not being able to lower the windows to escape, do as we do. Go buy SEVERAL spring loaded automatic center punches and make sure your family knows what they are and how to use them and where they stay in the vehicle. They will DEFINITELY break a window with ease just pressing on them until the spring trips.

We also keep several Benchmade seatbelt cutters (they're cheap) stashed with the center punches as a bailout kit that stays in the same place always.

It might seem silly to some, but I always like a plan "B".

After all that, I don't like being forced by law to make choices, either.

As residents on the bay here, and with all our canals, we try to be prepared in this household.
