Seatbelts save lives. It is that simple.
Any answers short of that are a waste of time to even address.

I'll wear it, but the law is an invasion and overreach of government. I don't need a law designed to protect me from myself. Before long we'll be required to get government permission to buy a chainsaw or lawn mower.

It's been about six years ago now. It was a week before Christmas on a Saturday morning. I heard the sound outside and knew what it was. I went outside on the porch to get a visual of what happened. There was a car upside down on the side of the road.

I ran out to the car and there was a guy just standing there beside it. I asked him if everyone was OK. He stands there with his hand over his mouth and points to the culvert. There was a young woman laying on the side of the road who had been ejected from the car. There were baby clothes and toys strewn all over the road from the passenger doors and trunk being slung open. I was worried about finding a baby.

I walked over to the girl and knew it was a bad situation. Head was busted. She was out cold. I held her hand and whispered in her ear that there may not be much time, but if she didn't know Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior then she needed to make that decision now.

I swear it must have taken the first responders half an hour to get there. Shortly after they arrived, she came to, in a semi-conscious state. Lots of gurgling and gasping for air. Didn't even seem human-like.

Got a call later that night that she had passed away at twenty-two years old. Left behind an infant daughter. I had trouble sleeping for over a month afterwards. If you guys who don't wear your seatbelts believe it doesn't affect anyone else besides yourself, keep on kidding yourself.

To me Seat Belt Laws are kind of like laws banning abortions. If we lived in a world where morality and common sense were prevalent, there would be no need for either laws.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

central ala,
I wear one because my life insurance pays my wife more if I am killed in an auto accident wearing it vs. not wearing it.

I use one but I think a law requiring it is insidious.

Now seriously David. You can't tell me there's police officers who don't cut an old seat belt latch from a junk car and clamp it in the receiver to make the buzzer go off.
I don't really think seat belts and abortions are in the same league.

They do and they always give the same lame excuses, don't want to burn up, don't want to drown and don't want to be caught in my car and not get out when under fire. The odds of dying in a wreck because they didn't wear their seat belt are much greater than any of those events occurring. They, like everyone else, are just looking for excuses to not do what they should do without being told.

There are no similarities between abortions and seat belt usage except what I stated. In a world of common sense and morality, there would be no need for laws concerning them.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Sure, half the people that have them now have nothing to do with LE, and most of the time, people like myself, who are in LE, don't want to advertise it on their personal vehicles. Those tags and decals are meaningless to me.

That's good. They should be. No one should be above the law.

I guess it was how my parents raised me, but I'm actually amazed there are people that don't wear them. And I'm glad I do, I was in a bad wreck my second year of college and probably would have been thrown out the windshield. The passenger in the car that hit me was thrown halfway out.

My wife does not wear one.

She was rear ended by a pickup truck when she was in her twenties while wearing her seatbelt. Her seat broke, the belt held. The belt caused moderate to severe injuries that still give her trouble to this day. If that law being an infringement on personal liberty ever goes to the supreme court - it may be her.

I usually wear one, but like it has been said it's a ridiculous and over-reaching law. While we are at it, I hate the helmet law that we have here in Alabama, if I want to run the risk it should be my choice.

x2. I've been in 2 wrecks neither of which I was wearing a seat belt. First one was a rollover, from me being stupid. Roof caved in and broke off the drivers side head rest. If I had been buckled it would have been my neck. I walked away without a scratch.

Second was a head on wreck in a stupid Toyota Tacoma (tin can). Thankfully I wasn't buckled and wound up in the back seat. The motor came all the way into the cab and sheared the bolts off the drivers seat. I got 6 stitches in my knee.

It may bite me in the ass one day, but after those 2 wrecks it's hard for me to put one on.

With that being said I do wear one on the interstate.

I wear one, not because of the law. I spent 7 years doing insurance defense work and most of that was car wrecks. I saw what happened when you had one on and what happened when you didn't. There are always exception where people lived because they were not wearing a seat belt. But, those are the exception to the rule.

I also rolled a Bronco in college and the seat belt is the only reason I wasn't injured. I had two friends who were thrown from a vehicle on a roll over and then crushed by the car or truck. The people in the same vehicle that had the belts on walked away.

Saying you don't want to wear it because you know someone who had a belt fail is like saying you are not going to wear a condom because you know someone who had one break once.

Make it voluntary. Let insurance have an exclusion that they are not required to cover medical, if one was not wearing a seat belt.

I have the same issue with motorcycle helmets. If you don't want to wear one, fine with me. But don't expect insurance to cover your medical bills because you wanted to play stupid games.

This exactly. I wear one because I believe that it protects me, not because the federal government put a stranglehold on states to enforce seatbelt laws.
