My 17 yr old son is about to get his first handgun, he likes the H&K P30 LEM in 9mm. Any thoughts or suggestions?

He can't legally own a handgun yet. I'd go with a smaller caliber though 9 mm would be a good start.

While he has not shot the HK before, he has shot my Ruger SR40 and my Springfield XDM 40 as well as my 380.

Yeah he's not old enough yet, he turns 18 this year so I am going to get it for him so that by the time he turns 18 he will know how to strip it,clean it and be proficient with it. What I don't get is that an 18yr old can't own a handgun but they can get a CC permit.

That's the gubment for us. And also a man can die for this country at 18 but can't drink a beer or purchase a legal handgun. CrayZ

That's a great gun but if he wants to carry it later when he is legal I suggest the SK version. I personally like the hand fit of the P2000SK LEM better than the P30SK
I think the LEM is a good choice for a new shooter in the HK pistol. It will offer a safer long smooth double action pull.

Take him to Hoover Tac and rent a gun. They will let you/him shoot any of the hand guns they have for rent. Buy the one that he shoots best/likes and is small enough for him to carry. He will figure out quickly which ones he doesn't like and the ones he does as a bonus y'all get an awesome day together.

What law do you believe states an 18 year old can't own a handgun?

I have the full sized SR 40, it's just too big for him, my Springfield fits his hand better. He looked at the S&W M&P, FNH, Springfield, and the Ruger but ge likes the way the HK feels in his hand. He was looking at the HK P30 but he's like me and doesn't like the feel of a handgun that has too small of a grip. The HK P30 LEM is just the right size that it's not a full size handgun, but not so small that his pinky finger does not touch the grip.

You can't buy one from a FFL u til you are 21. You can buy one from an individual when you are 18. You can legally own one at 18. How can you legally transport it? You can't have it in the vehicle unless you are 21 right.
If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong.

No wonder gun control advocates can get so much traction. Hell, most gun owners don't know anything about gun laws.
