I've found 165gr - 168gr shoot best from the guns I've run them through. I've not tried anything heavier.
There are two types of gun enthusiasts ... Those who have been F#CKED by PTG and those who will be!

165/168. The 168 and the .308 are literally made for each other. The guys that say their .308 likes 150's...their .308's would LOVE 168's.

Mine shoots a sub MOA group with 150 Nosler Bal Tips. Shoots similar groups with 168 and 175 gr. target bullets as well. I'd be shocked if I couldn't get a little heavier hunting bullet to shoot well, just haven't tried.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

I've used a .308 as my primary deer gun since I bought a Remington 660 in 1969. It cost $96, though I did get a special price on it. I earned the money to buy it by growing and selling watermelons. I used 165g Sierra bullets with great results for many years
When I switched to a model 700 mountain rifle in early 90s I started loading 150g NBT and have been satisfied enough with that load that I haven't experimented with it in years. My load uses W748 and averages about 2915 fps and is moa in this rifle provided I wait a long time between shots.
The thing I like about the 150 in a .308 is that it's not hard to make handloads that are faster than factory 30-06 of the same weight. That's probably harder to do with 165 and I'm not sure it's even possible with 180 and heavier.
I prefer a short action rifle for deer hunting and I think it's hard to beat a .308 with 150g bullets. It's a very efficient load. Talk of efficiency in a rifle seems to annoy some, but I've never understood why. Getting more velocity from less powder seems like a good thing to me.
