I was reading an article a couple of days ago about a guy in Alabama that fell out of his stand while hunting. He fell 40'. My question is why would he climb 40'? I'll go ahead and say now that I don't use a climber anymore and haven't in years. When I did though, about 20' was the highest I climbed. I just didn't see the benefit of going any higher. I usually climbed up to about the canopy of the tree to try and help camouflage me but realistically you'd have to look to find a tree that you can climb 40' high in and still be able to see without other trees and such blocking your view.

20-25 is about as far as I climb. Have rarely if ever seen a need to go any higher

I climb until i can see the best, without getting into the canopy. Thats usually 20-25', but sometimes it may be 15 or 30.

Usually at least 20, but rarely 30. I have a few stands that are trees that I can climb limbs and I have a climber higher up that I use as a lock on or I get in and climb 10 feet higher. Two of those I climb to 40' because I need the height to see over some terrain features.

Usually around 18-20'. Shooting a longbow the higher I climb the smaller the kill zone is so I like to be at a height where I can get double lung.

Normally 15 to 20. Not uncommon though to go 30. Just depends on terrain.

It all depends on the terrain,15-25 ft.I saw that story that said 40,also heard that a friend of his said it was only about 25 and the story got stretched to 40.Either way 25 or 40 and it's a terrible fall.I definitely use a harness every time nowadays.

40' is insane. I get less and less eager as I get older. 20-22' is as high as I'll go.

20-25. Any higher and I'm reducing my visibility.

With balance issues, I don't climb any longer, but when I did, I found that 20' was plenty high enough. That was easy since my rope to pull my bow up is 20'. If limbs on nearby trees were a problem then I might go 25'. Anything over that started affecting the angle too much on the shot I would hope to have. I didn't want too steep of an angle.

I've heard people say that they would climb high enough that the wind wasn't a factor. I just argued that if I kept the wind in my face, it was even less of a factor. Besides, I really don't like heights, I just conquered my fear with all the courage I could muster to get that 20' up a tree every time I hunted.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

I used to be the "have to 30' up a tree" guy. I don`t climb that high anymore. 15'-20' is bout all I climb now but I have gotten smarter as I got older and I pick better spots to climb with cover and suck.

Many people really don't have a clue how high they are. I bet a lot that say they are 40' up probably are only 20'. Not that they are intentionally lying, they just aren't as high as they think.

I like getting between 20' and 25'. But I'll go higher if it's better cover and view. The only time I would ever get to 40' would be overlooking a clear cut.

10 to 25 depending on terrain like most have said. Climbing at the bottom of a ridge if I expect the deer to be coming from the ridge to me then depending on the tree, and the cover I have at different heights determines how high I feel safe in climbing.

I listed my smaller number a little lower because when I climb if possible I try to find a tree that has some cover right against it, or behind it so that if looking at me from head on my silhouette is broken up.

12 to 15 feet is my max,I am extremely afraid of heights, plus I am just not psychically able to climb

much. When I set up a lock on it is usually around 15 feet also, stepping into those things scare me to death.I just don't see the need in getting so high.I do most all of my rifle hunting from the ground, and a good bit of my bow hunting also,I really like being eye to eye with my quarry so climbing is not one of my top priorities.

I would rather be turkey hunting

I have a 20' foot rope that I pull my backpack up with. When it gets tight I stop climbing.

If anyone doesn't know the difference in 20 feet and 40 feet being up in a tree then IMO they have some serious issues. That's a tremendous difference.

Judging a buck's score or the weight of a bass is one thing. Not knowing that you're 20 feet higher in a tree is being stupid. Forty is really dang high.

Have one tree I climb 40ish. Have to though to be able to see down the road I am huntin.in 2 or 3 years the pine on the edge of the road should be big enough and I'll be able to back it down to around 15 or 20.
