Some Model of a Winchester 12 Ga. pump shotgun (my brother has it now), some load of buckshot, on a dog deer drive in Minter Alabama in the late 70's, probably 1977 or '78.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

1981. My first gun was a Winchester 1400 12 gauge my parents got me for Christmas. I had been squirrel and dove hunting with my dad with it for a couple years but he didn't deer hunt. My uncle was in a dog club so I asked him to take me. He took me and my cousin for our first deer hunt on the same day. I really didn't know what to expect but man it sure was fun. We stopped for breakfast on the way, met up with the other hunters and they planned the first drive. It was about 12 degrees and we were riding in the back of the truck to the entrance to the property then we were mud riding falling all over each other boggin through the mud. We stopped and my uncle said hop out here load your gun shoot a deer if one comes by, if a dog comes by catch it. Didn't get a deer on that drive but I did catch a dog so I felt like I had done good. We did this a couple more times then ate BBQ for lunch. Everybody decided we would do one more drive before calling it a day. I was the first bystander out of the truck for this drive and closest to the road so they told me what ever else happened catch the dogs. A little btw later I heard the dogs strike up and they were heading my way. I heard something running towards me so I got ready and all of a sudden a doe popped out right in front of me. I brought the gun up and at the shot ,she rolled. Then all of a sudden there were dogs everywhere. When the truck came back to pick me up I had the doe and 6 hounds. After that I was hooked. Been hunting ever since. Don't dog hunt any more but sure would like to do it again for old times. Crazy thing about that hunt. It was mine and my cousins first hunt, I've been hunting ever since but my cousin never went again.

.308 Sako Mannlicher Carbine. 8 years old. 10 pointer.
Transportation was provided by my brand new Honda 110 3-wheeler. Climbed the tree with a Baker climbing stand I stole from a hook in the barn. Hunted what I now know to be called a Funnel. Strip of woods between two larger woodlots on a cattle farm. I picked the spot.
Day after Thanksgiving. Tennessee. They didn't think I'd shoot anything and I was just having fun being a kid. I told my Dad I was going deer hunting and he just said ok, but added that we'll go to Alabama in the next week and deer hunt. We were quail hunting that weekend with extended family around for the holiday. We didn't have many deer in our neck of the woods back then. A few but not many. We had enough. He came right through there at daylight and I dropped him where he was standing. Couldn't get him on the back of the 3-wheeler so I tied his rack to the rear bar and drug him back to the house. Wore all the hair off one side of him, Lol!. Never forget my ole man's face or my Grandfather's when I showed up with it.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

November 15, 2002. I was 14 years old and my dad checked me out of school for opening day of Illinois gun season. I had mowed grass all summer to buy a muzzleloader because I wanted more range than my youth model 870. I bought a .50 cal Knight Wolverine 209. I remember my dad calling me on the 2-way radios telling me that he had a buck chasing a doe run by him and he couldn't get any of them to slow down for a shot. Not long after the same deer came running by me, a big doe, a 6 point scrub buck, and a bleating fawn chasing both of them. They ran full tilt by me 2 times and I couldn't get a shot. Finally the fawn stopped and I was settling in on her shoulder when I saw the doe coming back out of the brush, she walked to the fawn and they sniffed noses... I shot the mom right in the shoulder. She ran 20 yards and piled up. While she lay there the buck came out and kept trying to make her get up. I wanted so bad to kill him too, but only had one deer tag. To this day this is probably the 2nd biggest doe I have killed, I killed one in Ohio years later that looked like a mule. Good memories, thanks for creating this thread! no problem, everyone likes a good ol' trip down memory lane once in a while. I enjoy the hell out of reading them.

January of 96', 7 years old with my savage 243. cold morning in the high 20's low 30's. I was sitting on the foot platform of the ladder stand and my dad was sitting in the seat above me. We had been there roughly an hour and I was starting to get cold and figity and asking my dad if we could leave ( I remember he kept saying " 30 more minutes" everytime I'd ask). sure enough about 15 minutes after he last told me to wait a 7 point came by the foot of our stand following a doe. when he reached the bottom of the stand, he stopped, looked straight up at us, turned and bolted. he jumped once and got mid bound into his second leap and I saw him flash in my scope. I pulled the trigger and dropped him in mid air.

Six point with a Ruger Number One .308 at about 40 yards from a slightly elevated blind in the Florida panhandle at dawn nearly ten years ago. My first shot went through the 2x4 window sill about an inch from the muzzle, flashblinding me and deafening me. Fortunately the deer stood there for a few seconds, giving me enough time to reload the single shot rifle and get another round off as he was quartering away. #HowNotToDoIt
