When did this become "the thing"? That is some stupid shucks to me. I thought it was something idiots on TV did to sound cool. It's about as dumb as naming trees in the woods. Oh, that pine is Larry.
Before people started hearing that crap on The High Fence with Tom and Jerry, no one did it. I have used cameras since they were film. I have never had to name a deer to keep track of them. Hell, you know looking at them what deer they are, they don't need a silly name.
No one ever names them Bob or Tom. It is always some thing cool, like "The split brow buck" or "Jamis Winson", or "sparkle pants".
Sorry, maybe I am just getting old and cranky. But, when I read a name for a deer, I hear it in some whinny Midwestern voice. Totally agree. I have never named a deer - I just go by physical descriptions only. Have one *referred* to in terms of where it was killed (Ramer) but that is not a name. We used to have a really ugly buck with a big humped nose - and that is exactly what I called it: "that ugly buck with a big humped nose." No name was necessary. If someone names a deer one time/once in a blue moon no big deal, but the current obsession with putting a name on every cotton picking deer is totally metrosexual.

Yep...then they work the deer's "name" into the kill story.

It's normal to name your pets. That's what these deer are to these guys on TV. They watch them grow up in the big free range pin and pays thousands of dollars for them

My thought....some of ya'll need to stay indoors the next few days or you might drown.

It is common place on properties where selective harvest is practiced and folks don't kill every legal buck they see. A lot of places have a hit list and you damn well better not shoot one not on the list. It is a lot of fun and a challenge to target a particular buck. It's not like we're all hunter gatherers trying to feed our tribe This

It's just a way to identify them and keep them separate from each other. If you have several 10 pointers on camera , how ya gonna keep them separate , number them 10 number 1,2,3 ? I think it became more common place since game cams have come on the scene. Lots of folks name their stands , that goofy too? I like naming big bucks, that usually means I know a lot about them and the odds of them dying are high.

They are also the same ones that "back out" and leave a shot deer for in the morning because they don't know how to blood trail on a crappy hit. I don't care one way or another, but I disagree with you on this. Sometimes the best thing to do is leave a deer laying till it dies instead of pushing it off into a gulf or cutover where it will never be retrieved. My BinL once shot a deer that made a figure 8 and went off in a deep holler. We crawled for about a half mile tracking that deer in the dark. When we found the second place it bedded down we stopped. Went back the next morning and it wasn't 50 yards from the last place we jumped it. It was headed off in a cove where we would have lost it for good. Part of being a good tracker is knowing when to stop.

If you have one with an unusual or big rack I get it, but naming every deer you have seems a bit much and by that I mean ghey

It's not like we're all hunter gatherers trying to feed our tribe Man, I am very selective about what I shoot. It has nothing to do with being selective. It might be for some. But, every person that kills a big deer has a name for it these days. Maybe my brain works different. I can remember them by characteristics, I don't need names. But, then, I don't tell people what I see and I certainly, don't tell them when I see a shooter.

BBB what Deadwood is talking about is a guy that would leave a deer over night then hunt the next morning before looking for it. We all agree it's best to allow a deer to bleed out rather than bump him into the next county. It all depends on where the deer is hit, that tells us how long we need to wait. Hunt Safe

Part of being a good tracker is knowing when to stop. I agree BBB, if you shoot one right at dark with a bad hit , worst thing you can do is chase it all over the woods at night. No way to prove it , but I'd bet there have been way more deer lost pushing them than waiting.
