When did this become "the thing"? That is some stupid shucks to me. I thought it was something idiots on TV did to sound cool. It's about as dumb as naming trees in the woods. Oh, that pine is Larry.
Before people started hearing that crap on The High Fence with Tom and Jerry, no one did it. I have used cameras since they were film. I have never had to name a deer to keep track of them. Hell, you know looking at them what deer they are, they don't need a silly name.
No one ever names them Bob or Tom. It is always some thing cool, like "The split brow buck" or "Jamis Winson", or "sparkle pants".
Sorry, maybe I am just getting old and cranky. But, when I read a name for a deer, I hear it in some whinny Midwestern voice.

I think it's goofy as chit. It's nothing new, though. People have put names on deer and other animals, but mostly deer, for decades. TV and video make it worse, though.

folks been naming deer for at least a hundred years, nothing new there. Read some of the old 1800-1900 hunting stories/books and they named some deer. Probably got a big boost from game cameras and TV hunting shows I'd guess. go back to bed ya old crank.

Goofy
EDIT: I've named one once. Had a goofy looking 1 horned deer that we'd had on camera for a couple of years. Rack was kinda goofed up and just 1 long twisted point one one side. Called him "dummy" because we had a bunch of pics of him with his face right up in the camera with a goofy look on his face.
Dummy was my first (only) bow kill

Bear in mind, these are the same f*****s that talk about "tonight" for the evening hunt and shooting a "toad". They are also the same ones that "back out" and leave a shot deer for in the morning because they don't know how to blood trail on a crappy hit. They do all this stuff hoping it will become buzz words that everybody else will start using.
In the rare instance I watch a hunting show, I always turn the sound down so I don't have to hear the fake after shot interview. Damn a bunch of talking.
Dr. Kroll is about the only one I want to hear talking.

Yeah I agree it's goofy. Most of the names could double as names for bowel movements
Side note. Next big buck I kill, I'm naming it rest notches but I will pronounce it ( rrrrest nochase)

Personally, I wouldn't do it. But, if it makes one fell more like a "professional" hunter in doing so, have at it.

I name a lot of my Midwest shooter bucks on one particular farm. I have a lot of history with this farm and the deer that live on it. It easier for me to give the shooters a name when you share the lease with another person. It's a lot easier to say I saw Billy Bob rather than try to explain which deer I saw by antler characteristics.
I do bot name a deer to be cool or in the fad. I don't have anything to prove nor am I trying to impress anyone. It's something I just do on this particular farm.
