Wonder why he would leave in the middle of the season?
Lot of rumors out there that this decision wasn't 100% his....lot of people think his dad was really pushing it. Also, keep in mind his fiancé is in CA. Still, though, you don't just quit on your team halfway through the season. stick it out, take what playing time you can get, then part ways at the end of the year. Either way, he still has to sit out the 2017 season, so he gains nothing by leaving now (from that standpoint)
