I have had to deal with some companies in various other countries and they'll take a month off for Vacation EVERY YEAR...and those SOB's are gone... not answering e-mails or give a flying rip if you need anything while they are out. They freaking vanish and act like it ain't no big deal. An off day means I'm gone, period. Vacation means I'm not available, period. If I happen to check in, text or something else, that's on me. But I plan accordingly beforehand and when I'm not working, I'm not working. That's what vacation and off days should be. This is me. If I work for 10 minutes my vacation day becomes a billed work day. When I am off I am off.
