I recommend leaving it open and running year round. It's easier to maintain imo. Plus get one of the L E D color logic lights and watch it at night. Sucker looks like a UFO landing in the back yard. Big fun. Pools can be year round backyard features now days.

I typically run mine at night expecting it to be the coldest time. You also have to pay attention to prolonged freezing periods, which aren't common. If it's going to get below freezing and stay there for several days, I will run my pump to keep the water from freezing. I have had better luck maintaining the pool water keeping it open all year.

This is what I do. just maintain the Ph and run and cover the equipment with a blanket it when is below 35*. but, you only need to run your pump long enough to turn the water 1x per 24 hrs at a minimum.
