He has the same drop tine, makes you think that it is the same deer.

Four years apart would put him at 7-8 years old easy

Hard for me to tell in the picture, but I'd say it's not the same deer. I don't think there is anyway that the deer on the bottom is 8 years old. That's a 3.5 - 4.5 year old deer on the bottom. But if you kill him his jawbone will let you know. I wouldn't pass on either.

A lot of similarities between the two. Same sweeping beams, same brows, same kicker. My vote is it's the same deer. Can't see enough of the body in the second picture for an age guess but if it is the same deer, he's ancient.

yes, look at the shape, size direction of brow tines. Everything else looks very similar too, but brow tines usually stay the same year after year.

Looks like same buck, and he doesn't look like he's going downhill to me.

No, but it does appear to have the same genetics.

The 2016 picture appears to be younger than the 2012 (even though it isn't a good picture to judge)

I vote yes.....too identical to just be a genetic kin. Sounds like you also have his core area narrowed down pretty good as well. Get in there and get that old joker this year. thumbup

If it is him he's a 8 point now was a nine and spread is smaller but when your nine or ten it happens http://i1160.photobucket.com/albums/q498...zpshqpwrtqi.jpg

Look at the face on that 2nd deer, he's an up an comer. The first pic has a gut on him. Not the same deer.

Not the same deer. Why didnt you post that second recent pic that you just posted the link to with the first ones. I was scratching my head thinking that the deer in the pic looked younger than the first but the rack was so similar. After seeing the pic you just posted, it is definitely a different deer. That is a much better pic for aging. First deer was 6+ 4yrs ago, based on the pic you just posted, this second deer has same genetics but is 4-5 yrs today.

A buck that’s possibly that old is not going to look like a stud in his prime. There’s a good chance he may be 20-30 lbs lighter than he used to be. The rack is just nearly identical in every little curve and unique feature. Look at the right brow tine for instance...same slight angle to the right. The end of both main beam turn up the same exact way....the kicker is the exact same... I think there’s only one solution to this problem…….

Troy what do you think? grin

CNC, first of all, the first thing you do in aging a deer is ignore the rack. Can you agree that the very first pic shown is of a fully mature 6+ yr old buck? If so, look at the pic in the photobucket attachment in post #1812531 above. I've been aging deer on the hoof and with jawbones since the 90's and I'm generally pretty good at it. The buck in that pic is not a 9-10 yr old deer. In my opinion it is a healthy 5 yr old in very good shape coming out of the summer. I'll guarantee you the second buck has his genetics but it is not the same deer.

I think it’s very possible for that first pic to be a 4-5 year old….that would put the buck being 8-9 now. I don’t think there a set mold that we can put deer of that age into as it concerns their body. I’ve seen my neighbors kill some on their property that weighed 170 lbs and you would have thought them to be younger by just looking at the body compared to what the jawbone eventually showed.

Bottom pic from what I see doesn't look 8 plus. Top one may be his daddy. Post a better view of the bottom one if you have it.
