You shoot a 150" + deer and gut shot it, it runs 300-400 yards and your hunting buddy shoots and drops it...whose deer? I ask because I know people that have went through this.

First this has nothing to do with me, I just heard about some guys this happened to. I thought it was interesting. To put another spin on it, what if it happened to complete strangers on public land, that would get interesting fast.

300 to 400yds is a long run. On open ground that might not seem like much but where I hunt that is a long ways. Sort of like a pound of feathers or a pound of lead ain't it?

No count heathen, i say. 35 years ago alot of people would. I grew up hunting public lands with my Uncle in North Tuscaloosa County. We had to compete with hunters coming down from Walker county. Them guys shot everything that walked. It seemed like back then alot of people were always out of work so they used the meat to feed families. I know my Uncle was unemployed for a while back then and they ate deer every meal while they had it.

I went on a charity hunt when I was 18, Sumpter Co Lurleen Wallace Cancer Charity hunt at Bellamy. 750 hunters, either sex the first day. A nice six point came by me and I shot twice with 12ga slugs, deer kept going. A doe came by and I killed her. Brother came over and we went to check on the bucks sign...good blood trail. We trailed the deer 150 yards er so to an old man standing over the deer. Seems he had been deer hunting all his life and this was the first deer he had 'killed". Didn't even have a knife so I said I'd gut it for him. Rolled it over and there were my two slug holes in the chest, told brother I had hit it twice.
The old man (prolly 70) said if I hit it first it was mine. He said the deer was on it's knees when he neck shot it at twenty yards. I told him my shots wern't fatal(they were) and it was his deer...he sure lit up then. We helped him drag it out and load it. It was my deer by any standard...but I wasn't going to take it away from him.
I've spent most of the money I've made in my lifetime on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted.....

I was on a hunt in Sumpter Co when a kid shot a huge buck down with buckshot. Buck got up and struggled down the hill and the next stander walked over and shot the deer as it lay on the ground...and claimed the deer as his. It almost come to a fight with several of the hunters taking the kids side. Asshole took the deer to a taxidermist in Alabaster.
One of the hunters went by and paid for the deer and took it to the kid......

How many people have helped a friend track a wounded deer and when you walked up on it whoever was closest or quickest finished it off? It`s still your friends deer. Now on public land whoever finished it off should lay claim in my opinion. Simply because you just never know the mindset of some people over a deer and it`s not worth what could happen when 2 strangers start arguing over a deer in the middle of the woods with loaded guns.
In your darkest hour when the demons come, call on me brother and we'll fight them together.

Many years ago I gut shot a running buck with a .308. He was gonna die for sure, but he ran about 300 yards and got into our pond. I was blood trailing him when my dad saw him floundering around in the pond and shot him. When I got there, he made me get him out of the pond. Then he claimed the deer. It was worth letting him claim it because it gave me a story to tell.

When I was 15 I killed my first deer[4 point]on T.N.f.My dad had let me go down this dirt road I liked to hunt on and carry a friend with me.Dog hunters were running deer that morning and mine had slipped out the back of the run.The first time I shot I was on legal land.I had never seen a deer killed so I had no Idea he was gonna die or not.I chased that deer through the woods and was shooting every 50 yards or so.I was loaded 000 buck, punkin ball,000,punkin ball and so forth.I shot a total of 12 times reloading of course. The deer finally died in front of me.He was actually trying to die long before that but I had no idea. After all of the shooting my buddy and especially me were so excited that we started dragging back to the road and we ran into a guy dressed in what I assumed was a guy in army fatigues. He saw how ecstatic I was and told me if I didn't calm down I was gonna have a heart attack dragging that deer.So he grabbed a leg and helped drag. When we got him back to the truck the other hunters were not there yet so he shook my hand and congratulated me and left. The next time we were there we were camping and hunting for a few days.He stopped by and talked to my dad.Come to find out he was a warden[I had never even heard the word game warden] and he told my dad that I had shot the deer on legal land and dragged it off of posted land and he had watched the whole thing start to finish. He said he couldn't find it in himself to say anything to me that day but that my dad needed to make sure I knew where the property boundaries were and educate me as to their whereabouts. The dog hunters had come up during the drag and said that they had shot the deer first and he simply said I don't believe so you guys are looking for another deer and they went on their way.I remember thinking "wow that was quick" but was so excited that I never gave it a second thought.Looking back now thank you Mr.Game warden whoever you were because after that day deer hunting became much more than a hobby it is my way of life.
