What data indicates a need to shorten the season?

Was already too long, then the dumb sons of bitches on the cab extended it so the Dream Ranches of the world can sell a few more hunts.

Loss of revenue for the state. And high fence operations. Sound management has taken a back seat to politics and $.

Rifle season state wide: Saturday prior to thanksgiving until the Sunday after thanksgiving. Jan 15 - Jan 25
Archery: Oct 15 - Jan 31
Muzzle-loader: Sept 15- Sept 30 (bucks only) Dec 25 - Jan 2
Or this scenario would likely make some of you happy:
Jan 1 - Dec 31 any weapon and no limit on bucks or does ( spotted fawns legal) See this is why people complain. This may be good for you but this wouldn't allow me to gun hunt the rut on my place. And to the OP no deer season is not too long. I'm only going to kill what I can eat which is about 3-4 per year. That's all I'm going to kill if the season stays the same or stays open all year.

X2. Bow season should open later and run until the end of season. Increase Muzzle Loader to two weeks. It would be great to knock the ten days off the front of bow season that were added at the end of season. I see too many does shot with spotted fawns in our early season we have now.

Bow season in Franklin Co. TN just 15 miles North of my house opens 3 weeks before October 15. They have the same breeding period as Skyline/Hytop just South of the state line. I think October 1 would be about right for us .

I don't think many of you hunt every day some ,some mebe 50 % . so at that, 35-40 days, mebe takes out a deer in 30 -40 days, mebe 10 deer a season or less 3 or 4,not all areas are not short on stock, so I believe we need a good harvest count some how before we hang our selfs. we all cant travel all over to hunt, my thought. I agree with you. I think. Let's let this thing play out and see what happens. No reason to make snap decisions at this point. Not that they would listen to us anyway.

My thoughts exactly. If the season is extended and the limits stay the same, I will only be more picky. I just want to get in the woods and have a chance for a nice buck. The more time in the woods, the better my chance. But I also understand this isn't a one size fits all. No way to make everyone happy.

The season itself shouldn't be shortened, just the length of time we have to shoot something with a high powered rifle. Would love to see two-three weeks of rifle and the other times bow only with a few set timeframes of black powder mixed in. Just my two cents from hunting other states, feel free to flame away and tell me how wrong I am! It depends on the location in the state I guess. Just because other states do it, is not convincing enough for me. I'm open but I would have to hear more specifics. Are these "other states" deer poor? I like bow hunting too, but is that a reason to cut other people out of part of their season? Other states do a lot of things I don't agree with. A lot of older hunters don't like the thought of hauling a tree stand in and out. Under that plan, you just cut their time in the woods by 2/3. I imagine most hunters in AL wouldn't like your plan at all. I used to bow hunt on the WMA's between the gun hunts. I had the place to myself. The day we start running out of deer, that might be an option. Till then, live and let live. And that, is my opinion.

What’s your opinion? Would you be in favor of making deer season shorter where you hunt? The question really makes no sense. It makes no sense because for such a question to make any sense it has to be in relation to the rut. And the rut varies widely from place to place in Alabama. So modify the question to include the rut - all phases. Then ask how much time before and after that several week time period the season should be. But no, it isn't "too long" as the season gives people in different places time to do what they want to do. People only hunt when they want to hunt/can hunt so having the "long" season just gives hunters the opportunity to get however many hunting days in that they can/want to. I think most hunters in this State probably only hunt a half dozen days or so. Few actually hunt more than 20 days......~
