Yeah I do think it's too long. Where I hunt if I had from Oct 15th to Dec 15th I'd be happy. I'm South alabama I'm sure people would rather have Dec 15th to Feb 15th.

Follow up question…….Do you feel like shortening the season by 1-2 weeks would have any significant impact or would it have to be shortened much more?

No it's not too long. If you think it's too long then stop hunting if you don't want to hunt. Some folks can't hunt as much as others due to work or other issues. What you see as a long season may give that other person an opportunity to hunt 5-6 times in a season where he might only get to hunt 1 or 2 times with a shorter season. If you feel you hunted too much because season is long then don't hunt anymore. You don't have to hunt extra time if you don't want to. Just stop hunting and let the other folks who get a few extra days to hunt where they might not be able to with a shorter season. You might also lose out of state hunters who spend money in your local economy and keep your little local stores in business. If it bothers you so much, stay out of the woods. The season is longer but you can just ignore it by staying out of the woods. laugh beers

If the doe harvests continue to be as liberal as they are then yes it is too long in my opinion, but if there were some sensible doe limits in place then I think it would be just fine. As for being in favor of a shorter season where I hunt doesn't really matter to me as I have already shortened my season on my own. I only bowhunt if a true cold front comes through or have a shooter buck on camera in daytime so that severely limits my bow season lol and as far as gun season I will hunt opening week and then unless I have a shooter on camera during daytime hours I usually do not start hunting until January. Last year I hunted once in December. This pattern developed after many seasons of keeping records of when bucks were killed at my club and running cameras all year and watching patterns change.

It would if that week or two were during the rut.

They already cut the season off it south AL at the very best part. They need to extend it till the end of Feb and start 1 Oct.

The season itself shouldn't be shortened, just the length of time we have to shoot something with a high powered rifle. Would love to see two-three weeks of rifle and the other times bow only with a few set timeframes of black powder mixed in. Just my two cents from hunting other states, feel free to flame away and tell me how wrong I am!

Im thinking the same thing really... If you think it's too long for where you hunt... Well don't go hunting... Not everyone gets to hunt every as much as others, not everyone's rut is the same time... And lots of us have different hunting tactics that work at certain times of the season...

Rifle season state wide:
Saturday prior to thanksgiving until the Sunday after thanksgiving.
Jan 15 - Jan 25

Archery:
Oct 15 - Jan 31

Muzzle-loader:
Sept 15- Sept 30 (bucks only)
Dec 25 - Jan 2

Or this scenario would likely make some of you happy:

Jan 1 - Dec 31 any weapon and no limit on bucks or does ( spotted fawns legal)

Everybody has an opinion, I would prefer to close all bow hunting and just have rifle from Dec 20 to Feb 15.

When’s all said and done, there’s really only two things that the DCNR can change for you guys wanting to see change. They can shorten your season or they can decrease your bag limits. This discussion is 50% of that. If they’re going to shorten the season, then 1-2 weeks won’t make a hill of beans difference unless they take it out of the heart of the rut. You could close down the first 3 weeks of Dec but total harvest likely wouldn’t be that much different in the end. The bulk of our annual harvest is going to come during the first 10 ish days of gun season and 2-3 weeks surrounding the rut.

I think to make any significant impact with changes to season length then you are talking about having to make some hardcore changes. Changes like either cutting out 4+ weeks of hunting or going to a 2-3 week gun season. I think either one would be more than what most folks would be willing to do or be happy with.

Where I hunt I would be for
bow season 15 Nov - 31 Jan
gun season 15 Dec - 31 Jan
basically shave a month off at the beginning of season.

No need to cut out recreation for people.

With a 3 buck limit in place and hopefully a doe limit where needed its not doing any harm to extend the season. And I got a feeling they are going to cut the unlimited doe killing before too long.

I agree with a sensible doe limit there would be no need to ever consider shortening the season and there never would have been a need for a buck limit either for that matter....
