not bashing on Kingsford, because we have a bunch of Kinsford up at the cabin and use it regularly, just be aware that: "Today, KINGSFORD charcoal is manufactured from wood charcoal, anthracite coal, mineral charcoal, starch, sodium nitrate, limestone, sawdust, and borax. The wood and other high-carbon materials are heated in special ovens with little or no air. This process removes water, nitrogen and other elements, leaving almost pure carbon. " Source: http://old.cbbqa.org/wood/Kingsford.htmlIf none of that bothers you, have at it.

Lowes has 2 bags of 18 lb kingsford for $10. I bought 75 lbs for $20. not my favorite charcoal. but its a steal Mrs. Irish got a deal last year and I still have a bunch left. At least 2 1/2 - 15# bags. Plus 3 1/2 - 10# bags of Cowboy lump. I agree Kingsford ain't bad, but I'll bet I can taste some grilled food and tell you if it's been cooked with Kingsford. To be fair they cook all the ingredients, so even anthracite coal is almost pure carbon when they bind it all together into the briquettes.

Dang, Irishguy. I knew it had A-coal and cornstarch, but not all that other shizzle. BTW, I didn't mean to shut you plumb down on the scallop invite the other day, I'm just preoccupied with something good going on right now. I'll get up with you and we'll make a trip after this all passes as long as you don't wear that damn Flava Flav hat down here. My social skills suck sometimes. As to the subject at hand, Royal Oak is usually what I try to buy.

I was half-assed kidding, but Mrs. Irish and I are coming down probably in late August, early September and staying on the beach in a little house owned by the realtor who helped us with our property. We should get together and cook or go our to eat and toss back a few beers... Is Shipwreck Raw Bar still pretty good? Does that Vietnamese guy still work the bar? Mrs. Irish wants to go fishing somehow while we're down there. Neither one of us has ever been off-shore fishing. I'll send you a PM...

Pleasure speaking with you just now on the phone Irishguy!
I've never been in Shipwreck, unless that's the place down at Indian Pass with the Karaoke and the serve your self beer coolers where you turn in your bottlecaps to pay.

I'm halfway kidding but not really.

I'm halfway kidding but not really. I thought I clearly stated that I actually use Kingsford, so no snobbery, just trying to be informative. In all honesty, until I started studying up on the Kamado style grills a few months ago, I never knew there was so much to know about charcoal, and was always happy with any old charcoal except the nasty ol' Matchlight stuff. That said, Mrs. Irish and I have always tried to cook our meals with the freshest, least processed, ingredients we can get without unreasonable trouble, so I figure, why shouldn't we cook with a charcoal that has the least amount of weird added stuff in it? I specialize in pollution control systems for coal burning power plants, and coal has some pretty nasty stuff in it. However anthracite is probably the cleanest burning coal there is, and that's what's in Kingsford. On the other hand I do love me a good coal fired pizza. Probably the best pizza there is.
