Seeing Deadwoods comment on another thread got me to thinking about when I was a kid.I heard of guerilla warfare and fighters when I was a kid on the news all of the time and it scared the crap out of me because I was under the impression that gorillas were killing people.I have always wondered if I was the only person to ever think this.Did any of you guys have the same misconception when you were kids?

I heard this story about Japanese women.

Yeah, when I was a kid, the nightly news about Vietnam made reference to "guerilla fighters" and I thought they were talking about actual Silverbacks and Jane Goodall. laugh

Guilty.

I was a kid in the 60's, almost every night on the news Walter Cronkite would report on guerrilla fighters. I thought the VC had trained gorillas fighting for them.

I remember hearing about those gorillas killing and kidnapping folks when I was a kid. I couldn't understand why a gorilla would kidnap someone.

I've always known the difference as long as I can remember, but anytime I hear "Guerilla" anything I still think of gorillas.

They don't...but they do grab people by the ankle and drag them around in water. Apparently, a 168 gr BTHP cures them of the urge, though.

I just could never understand why the Irish (IRA) were fighting each other. Until I took a class in terrorism. Now I'm surprised they stop fighting. Real deep bad blood across the pond.

I always figured the Russians were gonna land at school anyday. I'd stare out the window watching like red dawn. Well about 1989 the racial crap hit Selma again one day and the natl guard showed up at my tiny elementary school. All I could think was well here we go. The Russians are here. But it was just rose sanders.

Y'all should've gone all Wolverine on her ass. It would have saved me some work.

Never had any problems with gorillas in Vietnam. I did have a pet spider monkey though. Named him Cpt Jack (short for jackoff) cause he always self entertained. I traded a South Vietnamese soldier a pack of cigarettes for him. Found out quick why I got him so cheap. He had to have been the worst pet monkey ever. Mean, nasty, bit, threw feces at you, tore up anything he could get his nasty little hands on. One day just about dark he got loose and ran out of the bunker and got into the wire around the firebase. He set off a trip flare. The flare set the weeds on fire and that set off a two more flares then a small booby trap. The guards thought VC were trying to get in again so they started firing a machine gun and some illumination flares. Last I saw of Cpt jack was a streak of fur with his ass on fire running down the bunker line setting off trip flares and screeching like a demented primate. Well, I guess that's what he was. No regrets. Wasn't much of a pet anyway.

Very complex situation, Catholic vs. Protestant, Maoist vs. capitolist, Irish vs. British, Northern Irish vs Irish. It's been defused for quite awhile, so it may be one conflict that may stay calm for some time to come.

From the sounds of that tale I do believe that Marcus Morehead owned that monkey before you did laugh

And yes, I was young enough that I thought they were talking about big hairy apes on the evening news in the 60s

I firmly believe that a double gallows should be constructed on the East Lawn of The White House. Politicians who willfully and shamelessly violate their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America should be swiftly tried and, upon conviction, publicly hanged at sunup the day after conviction. If multiple convicts are to be hanged they can choose with whom to share the gallows or names shall be drawn from the hangman's hat to be hanged 2 at a time.

The next major Hollywood movie about Vietnam needs to include a recreation of the Capt. Jack incident.
