How fast were you going? I laid a bike down once when I was a kid. It was on a dirt road with a long hill. Idk how fast i was going but I slid about 20 yards. I looked like I had been in a meat grinder. 10-12 Mph - level ground. I just hit the pavement once and then bounced into the ditch. Nothing remarkable. As many bicycle haters are here I thought they would get a smile out of it. No smile there. I cringe as I remember wiping out as a teenager on a ten speed. I had stopped at a country store to get a Coke and a bag of tater chips and took off again. After I got back up to speed (probably about 20-25 mph) I let go of the handlebars to concentrate on my Coke n chips. After a little ways, I glanced down at the handlebars and they were crooked. (turned out, they were a bit loose) In an instant I dropped my chips and jerked them back around straight. Big mistake. Bike went left, I didn't. There was a fresh tar and gravel patch on the road with a lot of loose gravel. I was wearing a pair of cleats, a pair of cut off jeans, a baseball cap and thats it. I slid to a stop on my back with a broken coke bottle in my hand. That was one sucky day right there.

No helmet, a ball hat, red shirt, black running shorts. Don't even own anything spandex. Think my wife does though. I'll take who's gonna be the first to ask for pics for $1000.00 Alex.

Worst one I remember was a buddy of mine lost his on a gravel road. Was wearing jeans, no shirt, and barefoot. Somehow his big toe got caught in the chain and was wrapped up in the front sprocket and his chest looked like the Apaches skinned him alive but he got loose before they were through. .

I was going down a hill on my mom and dads gravel driveway and my front tire hit a large rock. I went over the handlebars and didn't let go. The handlers broke the skin on my stomach and I had to spend 3 days in ICU at Children's and another two days in a regular room.

My cat says all y'all goobers can go to hell. Roadkill, what kind of Trek hybrid do you have? I'm trying to stretch my 21-year old Trek out for another year or two.

All the childhood recollections on here of bicycle wrecks made me realize that if your childhood memories do not include a bike wreck, you either didn't have a normal childhood or you landed on your head when you had one of your last major wipeout. Personally, I can't tell you how many times I wrecked. I do remember going airborne over the handlebars into a barbed wire fence one time. Not a cat, but a dog was chasing me that time and I still like most dogs.
Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

We had a limestone rock driveway the first couple of years I was learning to ride a bike. Rocks are fun for sliding, not so much for sliding on.

Lmao! I had to ask. . I got hurt bad when I was 5 years old on a little bitty bike. I was going down a hill on my mom and dads gravel driveway and my front tire hit a large rock. I went over the handlebars and didn't let go. The handlers broke the skin on my stomach and I had to spend 3 days in ICU at Children's and another two days in a regular room. My brother in law had an accident similar to that when he was about 8. He had built a ramp to jump his bike. Unfortunately his carpentry skills were poor and the ramp collapsed when he started up it. The handle bars jumped sideways and he landed on them. The handle bar penetrated his belly. Had a punctured stomach, bruised liver, and had to have his spleen removed. That was only the first of many accidents. Finally when he turned about 30 he slowed down.
I love my country, but don't trust my government.

Glad you are alright Roadkill. Dignity will heal up as soon as you run over the cat next time As far as stories go, here is my most memorable. Circa 1986, Winona, MS. Heading to summer 2 a day practices. Riding down a really big long hill, no hands, summer breeze in my face, cut off jean shorts like I liked it, cut off tshirt, football gear in bag slung over my shoulder, ball cap on backwards, Raybans, I was the bomb. Until this ginormous red wasp flew into my arm hole and stung the crap out of me. I jerked and started beating myself with my hands trying to kill that wasp..totally forgot I was going 20+mph down hill on asphalt with no hands. To this day I'm not sure what happened, but I vividly recall flying like superman and then doing a Pete Rose slide on the street, including digging in my chin and lip. I was ripped up bad. That wasn't the worst of it. Back then, Merthiolate was the cure all antiseptic. Red devil fire in a bottle.

If you spend enough time on that bike, its only a matter of time before you end up with a closed head trauma vs minor concussion (depending on the use of a helmet). I've been there. Smashed helmets in bad mountain bike wrecks, also been hit by a car going 45 mph. You don't think you need it until you do.

I can still see my sweet grandmother reaching for that little bottle and me running like hell the other way. That stuff left longlasting memories.
