Putin prays every night that we shoot down one of his planes so he can declare war on us. I'm getting tired of his antics.

NBC reporting it was 30 feet,... That seems like exaggeration.

We should have buzzed their tails with a sidewinder missile.

You can bet that what they DID do was record every electronic emission, as well as every available physical aspect presented along with tactics, attack profile, etc...shame it was such an older fighter, doubt they learned anything new from it. We (and they) have been playing this game since the end of WWII...elicit a response, record it, then study it. They do it with planes, ships, fast attack and boomer subs, artillery and infantry units, even individuals.

If the Navy had considered them a serious threat, the planes would have never even gotten close. The ships are part of a large exercise in the area which I'm sure includes an air cap and AWACS.

I'll bet those planes were detected shortly after takeoff and tracked their entire flight. Back in the 80s, I was flying F-4s out of Aviano, Italy. We were participating in a big exercise in the Mediteranean Sea and I buzzed a Russian destroyer at about the same altitude. Still have the pictures somewhere. It happens more than you think.

You sure about that? You didn't see how badly the Iranians embarrassed our Navy?

That involved the temporary detention of a crew of a small boat that drifted off course. Attacking a U.S. Warship is an entirely different matter. The flyby was just saber rattling. Those planes were 30 plus years old and unarmed.

Yes.. But it was still damn embarrassing! This current administration doesn't have the Balls to take on Putin or anyone else...

I'd be willing to bet that the destroyer's fire control team never put their tracking/targeting equipment online...that was the SU-24's whole mission: To get lit up with something that could be recorded and analyzed! They would have relied on telemetry from AWACS or other intercepting aircraft and kept their own gear quiet while watching and recording everything they could at the same time.

I'd hate to have a Phantom thundering by me at 30'! MAN, those things were loud!

Like JA says, they were probably noted and tracked since take-off. A single flight of SU-24's probably isn't going to ring many alarm bells. If they'd had ill intent, there would've been more of them, and they probably wouldn't have targeted a DDG, unless it was part of a missle defense picket line, but even then there would've been followers. He also would've launched weapons from WAY back before pressing in to follow up on his first volley. Modern warships can be tough nuts to crack, between HARM missles, CWIS, etc.

Of course, those 2 points are subject to debate...the Japanese thought that a single B-29 over Hiroshima was just a recon bird and not worth responding to, and a handful of ragheads in a motorboat full of explosives nearly did the USS Cole in.

I thought so, too, JBC, but abc 33/40 had this report.
