Just my honest opinion here. Back when there was no game laws and people killed whatever they wanted and however much they wanted deer were hunted to near extinction. Through the work of the State and locals the herd was brought back to a healthy level. There is the proof that we can't go without some regulation. I for one can say that there has been a big increase of bigger and old Bucks killed due to the 3 buck limit and better management. Want proof just look at all the pics being posted. I don't think that physical checking stations will work due to the prestated problem of lack of funding. I do feel that some sort of tagging system has to be put in place with HEFTY fines/punishment if not followed. Tags issued when license purchased. I also feel the state MUST get a better idea of actual deer population in all areas of the state, and tags issued for those areas of low deer density should be limited. But also as stated this will only effect law abiding hunters. That's why the punishment needs some teeth. I slap on the hand ain't gonna stop anything
I Pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Some men are born brothers, Others earn it... JD

I think some of you guys would only be happy if there were ZERO laws to govern the sport. I'm not a left wing liberal, socialist or a communist but without any laws at all it would be the wild west with no limits at all. The "if its brown its down" crowd would kill as many as they could and the resource would be destroyed for everyone. If there were no laws then there would be no outlaws. I think some of you guys are simply criminals and would rather legalize your criminal activities than face the facts of who you are and make a change.
If a guy invests his hard work, time and money into making his piece of property be as good as it can be and then happens to be next door to an asshole who feels it is his god given right to kill as many as he possibly can including does and bucks of any size/age with no limits, THAT IS BULLSHIT!!!!!! Our current system does almost nothing to stop or at least detour this type of person who has ZERO respect for either the resource or his neighbors. I LIKE IT. WELL SAID.

Frankie, It takes data to properly manage anything. This is just another data collection tool. That being said, making it mandatory is the only way to make the data collection even close to accurate. While that is true, I dont see it ever being accurate. In the area where I hunt there is extreme poverty. There some are people who live without running water or electricity. Some of these people hunt and fish for their existence. Some dont have a truck or a cell phone. There is no way to get to a physical check station and no phone to use an app. I think the idea of having more information is great, but there are so many people who would not report for whatever reason (dont believe in the intrusion to their lives, laziness, or not having car or phone). I think the best solution is to work with landowners (or corporate landowners) who are willing to do camera surveys, and collect jawbones. But that is time and money. They could probably get some students to help with the collection and even volunteers or retired people. If you have enough places where sampling is occurring then you can get a pretty good idea what the health and population numbers are. I am glad it is not my job to try and come up with this. Don't tell me people who are poor are poorer than the next broke guy down the street. These broke folks walk around with cell phones in there pockets that our government gives them for FREE the least they could do is use it to check in a deer harvest. They could get off their lazy asses and go to work!If they were born with a physical handicap that prevents you from working then that's one thing. If they are to damn lazy or think more highly of yourself than digging ditches or slopping hogs then to heck with you and your rights and civil liberties. Lazy lumps of whale crap didn't found this nation but they dang sure have ruined it.

I keep hearing about po' folks and black folks and such getting free phones from the government and would like to know where and how.

Our current system does almost nothing to stop or at least detour this type of person who has ZERO respect for either the resource or his neighbors. I agree with you in general, but consider how far some states take it where strict regulations have been the norm for years. Here's a jewel I found in the Maine turkey hunting regulations: >>>*Beginning in 2015, turkey hunters in WMDs 1-6 are assigned to either Season A or Season B based on their year of birth. During “odd” numbered calendar years such as 2015, hunters with “odd” birth years will be authorized to hunt during Season A (May 4-9, 2015 and May 18-23, 2015 this year); hunters with “even” birth years will be authorized to hunt during Season B (May 11-16, 2015 and May 25-30, 2015). All turkey hunters can hunt the last week (June 1-6, 2015). During “even” numbered calendar years (2016, 2018, etc.), hunters with “even” birth years will be authorized to hunt during Season A; hunters with “odd” birth years will be authorized to hunt during Season B<<<< Such nonsense as this eventually comes about when you start down the road of more and more regulations. And an important point about Maine turkey hunting is that a hunter can legally kill 2 gobblers and 2 more of either sex when you combine the fall and spring seasons. They could have a simple spring season like AL with a generous limit and kill the same number of turkeys, but govt doesn't want simple - it wants more and more regulations so that it appears to be more and more necessary. Surely there is a middle ground between no regulation and excessive regulation? Oh wait, that's kinda what we had for the first 40 years of my hunting career.

18 pages on this and I haven't seen "baiting" one time. This place is getting soft. since I'm gonna be regulated on the # of deer i kill, I should be able to kill them over a corn pile. And if y'all don't think that "baiting" will become legal, but only out of a motorized feeder that you pay "X" amount of dollars for the permit to stick on said feeder annually, you got another thing coming. But of course we'll be told those funds will be earmarked for the DCNR and the general fund won't touch them. I'm glad the state is finally sending out surveys. I feel it's a step in the right direction. i just sent an email to my advisory board rep. And suggested this same thing about baiting . I hope we get it!!

Well, son of a corn feeder. I thought that was just BS. What a friggin' joke and on our dime.
But, hey, more of the "for the good of society" appears to be paying off for some.

Survey from the DCNR ... Questions about:
— whether you hunt deer, turkey — area in the state (has 5 areas) — whether you support/oppose mandatory check-in — how you would want a check system (phone, computer, physical check station, etc.)
And then the survey crashed while I was filling it in.
Apparently the rumors of big changes on the way are true, or some of them.
Since you DCNR and CAB guys covertly monitor this site, here's a suggestion not just from me but by many: Publicly explain with good reasoning how this information will be used for the biological benefit of deer and turkeys, and how it won't be used to create trophy bucks for the QDM crowd. Because that's a huge perception by a lot of Joe Average hunters.
Thanks for at least asking for public input about it with the survey, too, unlike the comical screw-up from a couple of years ago.
Is that what that was? Mine went to the trash bin. I guess i could dig it out, and i would if i honestly thought my opinion or any of yours mattered to the anointed ones.

1. Stiffer fines 2. More leos, these are the only things that will deter SOME poachers. The system that the state has in place could be as effective as any tag system if you had the wardens to enforce them. I dont imagine any road hunter or night hunter that first writes down his kill on a harvest record, so they would be busted if caught by a warden. Folks that simply kill more than 3 bucks on their own property , I'm not sure that there is a way to enforce any laws that they choose not to follow other than a gw being present.

More regulation equals more need for enforcement and staff to process data, which equals more funds necessary.

They just need to go back to the one week doe days of the past and call it a day. WHY??? They, the state, wanted to lower the number of deer in the state. They set forth a plan, liberal doe seasons. They accomplished their goal! Period!

I thought the insurance companies are the ones who brought the coyotes in. That and increasing the doe days to save on vehicle collisions. I know that thread is on here somewhere from back in the day.
