Well since somebody made the jump to turkeys ... I find it ironic, funny that a bunch of known turkey murderers are on here preaching trigger restraint on deer. Why folks need to kill 5 turkeys in Alabama - wouldn't there be more mature turkeys if folks just killed 2 or 3 a year? Mississippi has had a 3 gobbler limit for ever and a bunch of folks on here seem to think that Mississippi is so far ahead of Alabama when it comes to game management and conservation.

My son is 14 and will roll a jake quick fast and in a hurry if given a chance. If more than two walk up I have been to known to make one flop after my son shoots. Ain't nothing wrong in the world with that. Fanning or low-crawling on turkeys, now that is just plain wrong (in my opinion).

How has Mississippi's turkey population fared biologically since the implementation of the 6-inch beard minimum imposed by the state wildlife agency? Far better? More mature gobblers? Healthier population? Or were there really that many sub-6 birds being killed every year to warrant - biologically - such a regulation?

I don't shoot jakes. But I don't insult, make fun of or tell someone else they shouldn't.

x2

As far as Mississippi goes, as soon as a turkey is mature enough to breed a hen, then there is no difference biologically in keeping the flocks population stable between a 2" bearded gobbler and a 12" bearded gobbler. Other than 2" bearded gobblers don't look as good on the Mississippi outdoor marketing brochures and in TV shows.

Sad to see when people get so self impressed and brainwashed with the trophy inches syndrome that they can't be happy with the experience.

This thread has been a blast - but I thought back about the original question.

The answer is that some people in some areas are letting bucks get older. A few of those places are fortunate enough to be successful for different reasons.

But, I truly believe there's less quality bucks being taken on a statewide level. I know a lot of people that hunt mostly because of the business I am in. I have a lot of friends and family and church friends that hunt. I sit here on December 27th and have not had one personal conversation or text message from a hunter that has harvested mature or trophy buck. Not one single good buck.

I only know about some of the big bucks being killed this year by social media of various forms. Think back 15 years ago with zero social media platforms (at least for myself). Would you have seen any the big buck pics on aldeer or Facebook? I wouldn't have.

While you are at it go ahead and kill a few jakes and a hen or two this spring while your killing.

How is shooting a hen the same as a spike?

I absolutely agree with all you said but I found this particular statement true and very funny!

I've never seen a meat hunter truly bothered by a trophy hunter. We may think it's stupid but we don't have a fit when we hear a gunshot across the line either.

I don't get pissed about a shot but when your neighbor shoots every day of gun season and he is hunting on less that 100acres. That's a problem. They are not eating all of that. They shoot them and take them to the processor and say " I would like to donate this deer". That's what I refer to as a "killer". Hunters for the hungry program is a great charity. It's has been an excuse for many to shoot the hell out of everything that looks like a deer.

So you can't kill good bucks because of your neighbor with the 100 acres?

EXACTLY!!!

The 'Horn Porn' is so entrenched that word of a really trophy-class buck spreads like wildfire. And, no doubt, I love seeing them, too! But, it gives a false impression of the overall harvest. Many (probably most) of them would have never been seen by the casual deer hunter 100 miles away without Social media.
Meanwhile, most people are going about their daily hunting activities in a normal manner. I do think that there are more bucks passed up due to education and limits. But, that does not necessarily equate to more trophy class deer being killed. Heck, there are LESS overall bucks killed now. And, I am seeing more average ones. But, I have not seen a huge jump in trophies.

X2 I personally do not know one person that has killed a good buck. Heck I only know of one guy killing a buck and it was a young six point. Yep these are the good old days of deer hunting in Alabama lol

Really have to agree with you. I am 15 and see about 4-5 deer a year and I hunt about 2-3 times a week, sometimes even more. There are guys in our club that have hunted all their life and have shot some big deer. I have shot about 5 deer in my whole life, even though I never see deer, I WILL NOT shoot a small deer, if a 15 year old that doesn't kill big deer every year pass up small deer, why does a grown man that has hunted all his life shoot a dang spike????

How many of those deer were does? You rarely see deer yet shoot does. Makes since to me.

You must watch a lot of hunting TV.

I'm one of them that has hunted all of my life. I shoot what is legal and what I want.

But I'm an old deer hunter...

Life is a journey. Make sure and bring plenty of Beer.

My luck has been so bad lately, it could be raining pussies and I'd catch one with a dick broke off in it.

Personally I think it would be frustrating to spend the time, money, and effort to hunt that much and to see no more deer than that. As long as that makes you happy and you feel good about yourself I guess that is all that matters. Just wondering, how much land you have to hunt?

I don't kill anything but mature bucks and have hunted that way after the first small buck I ever killed. That's just my personal preference but I'm not foolish enough or so caught up in my own enjoyment that I think the way I do it is the only way or the right way for everyone. Some hunters are jealous ,and petty and are their own worst enemy. Learn to enjoy what you have and quit worrying so much about what others are doing

I've only killed two does, both were at our friends hunting property in Greene County that needed help shooting does.

It is pretty frustrating but theres no way to change it. I hunt at Buckhorn Hunting Club in Tuscaloosa, we have 9000 acres, everything pays off once deer season is over, I see hogs and I mean big hogs about every week.

Btw, I dont care what you shoot. I just don't like the trophy hunter mentality forced on everyone.
