I start running cameras in July. I pick out my biggest what I call resident deer for the year. These are my shooters, This year I had 3 on the list that I would have pulled the trigger on. 3 years ago I had a down year and I didnt have one deer that I would have been excited about shooting. Some years I have had 5. My area doesn't have a lot of agriculture so my expectations are not as high as some. I have went 3 years between bucks before and it is what it is. I have been lucky enough the last two years to kill the biggest I had on camera. One was a 130 inch 8 point, the other a 140 inch 10 point. It changes from year to year, but these type of deer are usually 3.5 or 4.5 years old in my area. I have a few good neighbors and some that shoot whatever moves. I checked cameras today and one of my shooters is back and is now off limits for me after killing the ten this year. Unless my kids get a shot at him. This is just what I do and it has worked for me. I would call myself a trophy hunter in my area. I just don't get any excitement out of killing small ones. If I had a shot at a deer I call that hunt successful. I don't have to pull the trigger.
