Just as the title says, we are looking into going down to New Orleans in May. I'm not familiar with anything down there. Where are the safe places to stay? Everything I've looked at talks about districts, what are the ones to stay away from. Thanks

Loved the place as a kid. But the Only way to stay safe is to not leave your hotel...

I always stay at Windsor Court, out of the Bourbon Street scrum, but close enough to walk to dinner.

I went there once a couple years ago to throw a friends bachelor party. I stayed in a strip club for four days and every time I went to the bathroom I had a Mexican or black guy trying to sell me a snort off cocaine of the end of his key. What happens in NOLA stays in NOLA ..... Good luck

I'm pretty open minded but after a couple of hours of walking around Bourbon Street I just wanted to take a long hot shower.

Sig Sauer, to hell and back reliable.

Whatever suits you just tickles me plum to death.

Can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?

In the daylight, with a strong police escort.

laugh

To the op, my understanding is New Orleans is not unlike Birmingham. Don't stay out past midnight or so, don't go looking for trouble, and keep your eyes open.

As a resident of the "Uptown " area (off Magazine St near Audubon Park/Zoo), allow me to retort. NO is certainly more diverse than your standard AL suburban community but it has a quirky "charm" that we feel makes it a great place to live... and an even better place to visit!

So to answer your question: best place to stay is hands down the FQ. Yes the nearby Windsor Ct is plush and popular with celebrities but it's accordingly expensive. The Westin at Canal Place has the best views in the city and you can't beat the location. I am partial to the Ritz on Canal and it's adjoining step-sister, the Iberville Suites. But generally speaking you should have a great time staying anywhere in the FQ.

Another caveat: Bourbon St is a dump and becomes increasingly so after 10pm. I recommend walking around the quarter during the day. Get drunk early and go to bed! Or hop on the green line street car for an afternoon stroll around Tulane, down Maple St to Carrolton then over to Jacque's for dinner on Oak St. Cab it back to the hotel (Ritz has great Jazz nightly) and you're done.

I could go on and on... But I hope I've at least answered your question with a little local perspective. Come on down and have a great time!
