Rather by your hands or not, deer die horrible deaths. They don't grow old and die in their sleep on the recliner. Cold weather, starvation or being eaten alive by yotes. Being gut shot was probably a "Good Death" compared to how lots of them die. Not to mention what the aliens do to them.
