For me, the last year you can still see deer in it before it gets too tall. Usually 3-4 years after replanting.

If it hasn't been poisoned , I prefer the first year or two when there is plenty of tender growth for deer to browse on.

a fresh cut after they plant it (frowned upon) but is the best time to prepare for a future honey hole greenfield when placed in the perfect spot! I love a greenfield in 8ft pines thick as hell!!!

This is about my position too. Each cut is different, so it's hard to say how many years, but I like it to be at least waist high. I prefer one that hasn't been replanted, you get longer out of it. I still hunt a cut that is almost 10 years old, and although it's about head high with some volunteer trees that are getting tall, you can still see in it really good. I guess the short way to say what I like is: I prefer briars over sage, and I like it to be about the same height that a deer is tall.

If a cutover was sprayed and then burned at the end of September, how long before anything can grow in it? We had about 1000 acres sprayed with something, whatever it was must be some bad stuff because it killed everything, I'm talking down to the roots.

They'll plant little pines in it within 12 months, and then you'll have about 5-6 years before it's too tall to see in. It'll take about two years for the sage/briars to get thigh-high.
