Look on the shelf of any place that sells ammo and see what they have the most of. There is a reason.

30-06, 308, 270, etc.

Was his name J.Y. Jones?

J.Y. is an acquaintance of mine and he wrote a book about his quest to kill each species of big game animal in North America. He did it with an old Rem 700 in 30-06 topped with a 3-9x40 Leupold. He used 180 grains bullets for most of the critters and 220's for the bigger bears.

He's now on a quest to shoot all of the Asian critters with a Rem 700 in 7mm STW topped with a Swarovski scope. Rem and Swarovski gave him the gear to use.

Winchester Model 70 in 30/06, .270 Win. are 308, with a Leupold scope. If you do not reload these Cal. are easy to find and not real expensive.

I know a guy who has hunted all over the world for all kinds of stuff. He uses a BAR Safari 300 Win Mag. He borrowed a truly big rifle for his Cape buffalo. Only problem with something like that if you going to globe trot is some countries frown on bringing in a semi auto.
I've had 30-06, .270, .300, 25-06, 7-08 and now the .243. The .243 looks small but some serious deer killas on here rave about it. Going to use it this year. A .308 may be my next caliber. I'm excited about the .243. It's fun to shoot.

They all work but the best I have is a M77 Mk II all weather 308. Light and rugged. Didn't shoot so good out of the box but it's lights out now thanks to Timney and Varget.

I'd say for a deer rifle- anything in .308
For all North American game- a good bolt action 30-06

For Alabama deer hunting I'd go with a Remington 700 in 308

For an all around gun hunting anything in North America Remington 700 300 win mag

I shoot a 30:06 but have also used a Savage 300. It's as good as any rifle listed previously up to 150 yards.

I came, I saw, so I killed them all......Vern
