It's just $12 and a little elbow grease. I'd do it if I thought it might help. We don't own any real farm equipment. Most years I mow my plots with my lawnmower and overseed with wheat. Some years they're good. Some years they're not. But I think overseeding is essentially what a lot of farmers do with pastures. It keeps us semi in the game and we get some pretty green fields at times. We have sown oats too and things like no-plow. Really great years we have an old disk you can pull with a 4 wheeler. The more you tear up the ground the better but we've killed deer on overseeded fields.

Give it a try. I use this method all the time and it works well for me. Spray the weeds, wait about 2 weeks, sew your seeds and weed eat the grasses and weeds down over the seeds. How thick is the vegetation? What type of soil is it? If it's as hard as a brick, then that is not the ideal location for this method. Cereal rye and wheat grow well using this method along with small seeds like clover, rape, and ptt. I always plant before a rain event. A friend of mine here at work had the same situation. He had a section of cow pasture he wanted to plant, but had nothing but a pump sprayer. I talked him through it and he put in 3 micro plots and they all turned out well. He took a couple does off the plots during bow season. Birds plant millions of seeds just like this everyday. Good luck.

I'll be doing some of the same in a couple weeks, including dragging a push mower halfway across the state. Cereal rye, wheat, clover, and rape. Which of the below do you think the mowing does? 1) agitation helps to work the seed to the soil 2) cutting down dead grasses/weeds helps emerging plants quickly get sunlight 3) buries seed under clippings reducing the chance of birds eating them 4) buries seed under clippings helping to keep them moist Perhaps all 4? If it works it works, just curious what y'all think.

usually that throw in mow is mostly rye grass(not winter rye). You can get 50lbs for the price you pay for little bags of throw and mow, but winter rye would be a better choice mixed with some clover and turnips. Raking the ground beforehand helps.

Throw and Grow is a seed mix consisting mostly of ryegrass.......Throw and Mow is a planting technique. I think his original question was asking about the seed mix.

Been doing it for 3 years in greene co with horrible soil. Works like a champ. We spray in sept, mid oct spread wheat and clover and drag a heavy sizing screen around to mat the dead grass down. Fertilize abt 3-4 weeks later. 10 acres of fields takes about 4 hours with a ranger and a 4 wheeler
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

I'm about to start a new thread for the fall on "Throw and Mow" in the QDMA section if anyone is interested.
