Savage 220 is what I would buy if I was entering the slug gun market. I have too much money tied up in 1100 and 1187 slug guns so that is what I am sticking with.

What wmd said. If I was to go buy a new slug gun it would be the Savage 220. Hands down.

Buddy had a savage. It rocked. I found an 870 deer barrel in classifieds for $100 several months ago. But you'd get more accuracy and distance with savage.

I really liked my h&r but it was too heavy to tote really far. If I rode a 4 wheeler and walked a couple hundred yards to a tree I'd have kept it.
My buddy just bought a browning a bolt from buds. If I buy another slug gun that's what it will be

I was looking for an H&R, but gave up because I couldn't find one (that I could hold in my hand before I paid for it) and they apparently don't make them anymore. Now I'm saving up for a Savage 220.

I have an H&R single-shot 12-gauge like this one. http://www.hr1871.com/firearms/shotguns/ultraslug.aspThey're still in production far as I know in 12- and 20-gauge and different styles (thumbhole, etc.). Mine is heavy - you wouldn't want to stalk around all day with it - but it shoots well and throws out a chunk of OuchThatHurts lead. The Savage 220 is pretty badass, too.

There was a time when I would have said Savage 220, but the longer I have hunted with slug guns and the more wound channels (and lack of exit wounds on certain angles) I have looked at.....I have gone back to the 12 gauge and am gonna stay there from now on. Any and all slug offerings SUCK compared to high powered rifles on game so I'm gonna stick with hardened 12 gauge slugs for maximum penetration and the hope of a blood trail because unless you hit em in the spine or neck....they're gonna run due to the lack of energy.
Hence, I would suggest you look at new model of the Browning A-bolt 12 gauge. I have one of the older ones and love it. It won't shoot quite like a fine bolt action rifle but it sure feels like one though!

I had 3 gun stores looking for 6 months right after Christmas. One of them finally told me that they were told by the manufacturer they are out of production. I remember hearing something about someone buying H&R and assumed they were just downsizing or something. Maybe the gun store guy was just to lazy to order one for me...

I disagree with you guys. There is almost a 1:1 mapping of 12 ga slugs to 20 ga slugs (brand and construction).
If you are not shooting a rifled barreled slug gun, I could see possibly toting a 12, but if you can shoot sabots, I just don't think you shortchange yourself carrying a 20. I have an 1100 12 ga and shoot SSTs and it is a death-ray, but I carry my son's 20 ga 1187 if I hunt by myself.

I agree with that fact that is pretty much a 1:1 mapping for sure. I have just reached the conclusion that all 12 and 20 gauge slugs BOTH suck compared to high powered rifles. Hence, I choose the 12 because they are heavier across the board and will penetrate better across the board as a result (for a higher probability of having an exit wound and a good blood trail), all else being equal. I would much rather be toting a .308 shooting Partitions or a Barnes bullet all day over either of them.

Several thoughts: 1. The Savage 220 and 212 are fine slug guns. Very fine. 2. A remington 1100 with a rifled slug barrel and good scope is a deadly combination (See my avatar!) 3. wmd knows what he's talking about regarding slugs... 4. It stands to reason that a 12 gauge slug is going to make bigger holes than a 20 gauge. #DUH 5. If I were in the market today, I'd buy the Savage 212. That said, my 1100 blows big holes in deer when I do my part.

Off topic a bit but I made the mistake of shooting a doe facing me with a Remington Copper Solid on Redstone several years ago. It went "end zone to end zone" as they say. In the chest, out the butt and jellied everything in between. Bad ammo.

The H&R sluggers may indeed be out of production. BPS and Cabela's don't have them online. Checking with another source on this.
Regarding ammo and solid slugs, what's the preference? Buckhammer? Lightfield? Kent?
