I had money stolen from me via stolen checks. Something around $1800.00 back in 1998. I tracked down and put two of them in jail by not giving up and making the police do their jobs. I got reimbursed by my bank. So in the end no great loss. About 10 years later I got a check for restitution in the mail. Was something like $9.00. And my bank promptly contacted me wanting the check. I smiled as I signed it over to them. 
Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.
