Long story short...between the roaring creek and the steep hollers, I wasn't exactly sure where this guy was roosted. I could hear him pretty good, but each time he gobbled, he sounded in a different spot. I finally decided that he actually was on my side of the creek, but around a point and in the next holler. Wrong. I wound up getting busted as I circled around the back side of the ridge. I haven't hunted this tract much and wasn't very familiar with how the sound carries. Anyway, I walked in on him and he flew back towards my original listening spot. I decided to just sit down and do some more listening. He was the only bird I had heard gobble and I wanted to give him plenty of time to settle down. Finally around 8:15 I heard him gobble right on top of where I had started listening at daybreak. By 8:30, he had gobbled 4 or 5 more times so I headed back that way. When I eased out to the power line, I saw him in a plot about 250 yards away. He quickly walked out of the plot but I knew there was no way he had seen me. I gave him a minute to get deeper into the woods and I slipped across the power line and eased a little closer. I sat down and clucked a few times and he immediately answered probably 150 yards out. I didn't like the tree I was on so I eased over about 40 yards and got a better set up. I clucked again and he answered again but about half the distance. I knew he was coming so I laid my call down and got on the gun. I expected him to pop up over the hill any second. After a few long silent minutes, I clucked one more time and he hammered right in my face but just over the hill. Then I heard him drumming. I wasnt sure which way he was gonna go, but suddenly I saw a limb shake when he hopped over a dead fall about 35 yards out. I let him have the tss when he craned his neck to look for me. He doesn't have much in the spur department but he does have 2 beards. He sure gave me a rush with that last gobble. It was up close and personal, just how I like it.

That's a great pic that shows the coloring changes in the feathers beautifully! Congrats!
If your decoy doesnt have holes in it, your not letting him get close enough... J.H.
