I started a mineral lick at my place mid summer of last year and I really could not tell that it got a lot of use. That may have been because I started it so late in the year.

I put out 100# of loose white salt and 50# of loose red cattle type mineral and mixed it in with the soil that I loosened up with a hoe.

I plan to refresh this spot in the next day or so and I'd like to put out something that will draw the deer in so I can get camera PICS. I also want to use something that will be beneficial to the deer.

I have seen licks where there were holes big enough to drive a 4 wheeler into. I want one like that on my place.

So, what do I need to put into this lick? Y'all tell me what to use and I'll get it bought this week and put it out.

I use 1 part white salt, 1 part Dicalcium Phosphate, and 2 parts trace mineral salt. They will make a heckuva hole digging it up.

When I establish a new one, I just rake back the leaves or pine needles and spread the mixture, then take a gallon or two of water and pour all over it.

I use a 1 pound coffee can to mix mine. I also keep em fixed up in a 2 liter coke bottle that I've washed and dried out. I'll take a 2 liter bottle and put on the established licks when I refresh em in the spring. It's easy to carry a 2 liter bottle in to wherever I have a lick.

This lick is 2 years old.

That's where I got my original recipe from. I just don't do the rock salt.

Also, those prices are old. I think the DiCal I bought last year was pushing $30 a bag.

I put my ingredients in 5 gallon buckets with lids to store from year to year.

I've seen this recipe a lot but am having trouble finding the dical phosphate. Is calcium carbonate ok to substitute?

The only time I've seen problems establishing lick has been in association with sandy soils. Normally if you have some good clay you could use plain salt and get a good lick started.

Had neighbor that had a place with no clay, he took a small plactic kiddie pool, filled it with clay and burried it. It turned into a pretty good lick.

An old tried and true receipe (and cheap) is 1 part dicalcium phosphate, 2 parts trace mineral salts ( red stuff like you've described) and 1 part plain salt. You can use a coffee can to dole it out.

I have started a lot of salt licks in the last 30 years and have some the you can put a 4wheeler in. Make sure the you have a good clay base not sand. If you try and start a salt lick in sand it just washes out. Buy you 3-4 cattle mineral blocks and spread them around your property and by the end of the summer you will have a good salt lick at one of these spots with a hole in the ground. You won't have any doubt which one they hit the most and next year you can add one of the high price deer minerals mixes. You can bust these mineral block in half to cover more spots. Remember you won't have any doubt if the deer are using it, they will dig the ground up.

I think most mixtures are ok. Over the yrs Ive found placement is very important. I like red clay best. I also like to pour the mixture over a stump, deer will knaw the stump too. Ive seen stumps several feet in the air where deer have dug the dirt from around it.

I've got sites like your referring to. Some I've started some with a 50 lbs bag of plain white salt and some with just a bag of Deer-Cain.

Besides the dical, trace mineral, and salt you can add in dried molasses or grape koolaid as an attractant. Another thing to consider is placement. A salt or mineral lick needs to be placed close to a water source. I've always been told it needs to be within a 100 yards of a water source.

I always top mine off with baking soda.I heard about it somewhere[can't remember where].It is like a turbo booster to a lick.

I like to use sodium carbonate or "washing soda" to get them to start using a lick, it's like crack.

I agree, it is like crack. Been using AH washing soda for about five years now.

I'll take a picture this weekend of one I started a few years ago. I started it with deer Cain a nd rock salt. Every few months I'll add a bottle of Cain syrup to freshen it up.

Never heard of using the AH to establish. I will have to give it a shot when we put a new one out. How much do you use?

Never had any problem getting deer to use a lick quickly, as long as the lick was established in the right location. Like real estate, location is everything.

No need to add salt with trace mineral, It is mostly salt anyway.

I use a whole box, make sure it is AH Super Washing Soda like in my pic below. You can find it at Walmart sometimes and if the don't have it you can order it online at ACE hardware and have it delivered to your local ACE store. Lick is one I started in the spring of 2010.
